Council Bans E-Cigarettes in Public Places; Seeks New Water and Sewer Connection Fees

The Livingston Township Council enacted ordinances governing electronic cigarettes and sanitary sewers on Monday evening. Amending a current ordinance prohibiting smoking in township facilities, the first ordinance adds electronic cigarettes to the ban. The ordinance additionally prohibits the use of "electronic smoking devices" in all government buildings or on any township property located within 500 feet of any elementary or secondary educational institution. The amended ordinance also expands prohibited areas to include all outdoor public parks and recreational areas that are owned, leased, or used by the township. Councilman Rudy Fernandez noted that the ordinance will stay relevant as the town's open space expands now and in the future.

Leave a Little Extra Travel Time

It seems like everywhere you go these days, the roads are being torn up and traffic is snarled. Major highways are sometimes closed with traffic detoured miles out of the way. The Route 10 traffic pattern seems to change daily as the state works on replacing the bridge over the Passaic River; a plethora of local streets have been closed for re-paving, new curbing, or reconstruction; and now, a section of JFK Parkway in Livingston is about to be closed to traffic for roadwork. We have not been given any estimation of how long that will take; but, it certainly will snarl traffic.

No E-Cigs Here

The Township Council on Monday evening extended the municipality's ban on smoking in all areas of government buildings and on any township property located within 500 feet of a school to include outdoor public parks and recreational areas. The newly enacted law also extended the smoking ban to include electronic cigarettes, known as e-cigs, which are being marketed as a safe alternative to lighting up a traditional cigarette. The number of teens and 'tweens using these products doubled between 2011 and 2012. This is certainly a trend we want to discourage.
