Theft Charge Is Downgraded

Hanis Reed, 23, of Newark, was in Livingston Municipal Court this past week in relation to an incident on November 24, 2020. Reed was charged with theft by taking moveable property for stealing a 2020 Acura MDX.

Reed allegedly entered the unlocked vehicle, which contained its key fob, and stole it from the owner’s driveway. He was also charged with receiving stolen property.

Upon review by the Essex County prosecutor’s office, the theft charge was downgraded to a disorderly persons grade charge of theft by taking moveable property. Reed pled guilty to this and was fined $300 plus $33 in court costs; $75 for the Safe Neighborhoods Fund; and $50 for the Victims of Crimes Compensation Organization (VCCO). His charge of receiving stolen property was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
