A few months ago, the Township Council approved an ordinance that permits residents to walk their dogs along the walkway and outer grounds of the Oval. Specifically, dogs are now allowed on the inside oval of Robert Harp Drive, the area from the curb line to ten feet inside the curb line; on the outside of the oval of Robert Harp Drive, the area from the curb line to ten feet inside the curb line; the area bounded by Civic Center Drive and Robert Harp Drive to the north and the Old Force Home and St. Philomena’s Church to the south; and the area north of Robert Harp Drive between the western border of the library parking lot and the eastern entrance to the former recreation building now occupied by the Department of Public Works. Areas such as the athletic fields, the Veterans Memorial Park, the 9-11 Memorial Garden, and property owned by the Board of Education are excluded from this ordinance.
There are few better snapshots of our vibrant community than the Oval on a spring evening. High school games are being played on the fields (and nearby courts) with fans cheering on the players; others have set up volleyball nets to play near the gazebo; some people are stopping into our wonderful library to pick up their next great read; and runners and joggers navigate the inner and outer loops. We could go on, mentioning the lending library, bocce court, Memorial Park, and even the pool (once it opens) among other things. Adding more dogs will only heighten the Oval’s “Norman Rockwell” vibe in these bustling moments.
Now that the Oval is a “dog friendly space,” we encourage residents to take advantage of it. We are grateful to live in a pet friendly community, and look forward to seeing our furry friends around the Oval as the weather warms. Just remember to pick up after your dogs to keep things nice and clean for everyone!
