Council to Permit Closely Regulated, Limited Beer Sales at July 4 Celebration

A closely regulated and limited sale of beer will be permitted this year at the July 4 celebration at the Livingston Oval. By a 4-1 vote, with councilwoman Deborah Shapiro dissenting, the Township Council voted on Monday evening to permit the sale as a one-time experiment. Several residents urged the Council to reconsider the plan. Livingston Municipal Alliance Committee (LMAC) chairwoman Debbie Lindner said she was disappointed that the Council had not conferred with LMAC about the plan. "I am not a prohibitionist," Lindner told the Council, "I'm a preventionist." Calling the proposal "risky," Lindner said that the organizers cannot control the drinking that might occur before the patrons arrived at the July 4 venue. "I worry about people who don't appear to be drunk leaving and going home to be abusive to their families," she added.   To view more please log in or subscribe to the digital edition. ...
