Millie Gelbach Succumbs at 92

Former Livingston resident Millie Gelbach died on March 5, following a long illness. She was 92 years old. Born in Newark, she and her husband, Harry Gelbach, moved from Irvington to Livingston in 1952; and then to Cranbury in 1984. Mrs. Gelbach began her career as a kindergarten teacher in the 1940s. She spent more than 25 years helping her husband run their Newark-based family business, Ace Brake Exchange. She and her husband were members of the New Jersey Motor Truck Association (NJMTA) during the 1960s and '70s. She helped to establish Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston and held numerous position in organizations, such as B'nai Brith. She also worked for the Deborah Hospital Association. Mrs. Gelbach is survived by her children, Jill Gelbach and her partner, John Backe, of New York City; and Bonnie Toriello and her husband, Steven Toriello, also of New York City. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Etta Kanter, of Boyton Beach, Florida. Memorial donations may be made to Amsterdam Nursing Home, 1060 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10025. ...
