Sybil Waimon-Kaphan Dies on August 26

Former Livingston resident Sybil Waimon-Kaphan died on August 26. A private graveside service was held. Mrs. Waimon-Kaphan was born on May 1, 1922 in New York City and grew up in East Orange. At age 16, she was awarded a full scholarship at Parson's School of Design in New York City. She left to volunteer for the war effort and subsequently married her fi rst husband, pilot Matt Waimon. The two resided in Livingston, where they raised a daughter, Gail, and two sons, Larry and Chuck. She and her husband were a founding family of Temple Beth Shalom, where she taught religious school. Mrs. Waimon-Kaphan became a chapter president of Livingston Hadassah and went on to serve the Northern New Jersey Region as vice president. Following the death of her husband in 1983, she eventually married Monroe Kaphan and resided in Parsippany, until his death in 2008. Surviving family members also include her daughter Gail's life partner, Leonard Friedman; son Chuck's wife, Margit; and many grandchildren, great-granchildren and step-children.
