Teacher Brings Back Powerful Ideas About World War II Asian History

The calendar says September, but Livingston’s teachers celebrated the "New Year" on Monday, August 31, returning to school after summer recess to prepare for the opening of schools on Wednesday, September 2. The public schools opened with 6,005 students enrolled. "Our clocks are different," said Dr. Ernest Palestis, the new interim superintendent, referring to the educators who have the opportunity to start "fresh and refreshed" every September. "This is my New Year." Thanks to a grant from NJ Alpha (also known as the New Jersey Alliance for Learning and Preserving the History of World War II in Asia), Livingston teacher Suzanne Steckert spent an "eye-opening and emotional" two weeks in China. She returned with great enthusiasm about sharing the Chinese history of World War II with her students and colleagues. Steckert formed close bonds with the 16 teachers on the trip, who were from the U.S., Canada and Hong Kong. "We learned a lot from each other," she said.
