Community Activism

In a time when political activism is on the rise, with citizens standing up for what they believe in, Livingston residents are not sitting down when it comes to promoting their opinions on local issues. This week, we learned about Livingston United, a group of residents who have banded together to oppose the construction of a 7-Eleven at the site of the former Exxon gas station at 226 West Northfield Road, on the corner of Hillside Avenue. The group is an example of how residents can make their voices heard through numbers. It has taken swift action against the proposal by already creating a petition with nearly 100 signatures and raising more than $1,700 to support their cause. They oppose the development for two reasons – the detriment they believe a convenience store will have on their neighborhood, and environmental contamination at the site that has not been resolved.
