With the Livingston Coat Drive “now in the rearview mirror” for another season, Livingston Philanthropies is ramping up its Toiletries Challenge, an initiative to collect travel sized toiletries for the homeless. “We have an immediate and continuing need for all types of new travel/hotel-size toiletries,” notes Jeff Friedman, Livingston Philanthropies founder and director. “Many residents may have them tucked away from travel and will most likely never use them.” Toiletry items needed include shampoo, conditioner, lotion, razors, shaving cream, soap, cotton swabs, sewing kits, deodorant, tooth brushes, toothpaste, and, adds Friedman, “whatever extra ‘stuff’ folks want to donate.” Female sanitary pads and diapers in sizes 4, 5 and 6 are always in short supply, he says, while new cosmetic samples and unused make-up items are appreciated. “Like any of us, the homeless and poor want to look good, too,” he explains. “So cosmetics are always gladly received.” “Personal Shopping for the Homeless,” an initiative of Livingston Philanthropies, is an effective and inexpensive way to become part of the Toiletries Challenge, Friedman continues. “Our volunteers shop for the poor and homeless at Amazing Savings and the Dollar Store, both on Route 10 in East Hanover. It’s easy, fun and a wonderful way in which to reach out and help our brothers and sisters in dire need. “It’s beyond mind-numbing to realize these items are like gold to those who receive them from Livingston’s local ...
