Fred Zitomer, 83, of Windsor, Connecticut, beloved husband of Stephanie-Anne (Fowler) Zitomer, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2017 at MidState Medical Center, Meriden, Connecticut. Born October 19, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois, son of the late Jack and Rebecca (Woldow) Zitomer, he was raised in Brooklyn, New York and was graduated from Brooklyn Friends School in 1951. He was very active in sports, especially baseball, and had tryouts with the Boston Braves and New York Yankees. Fred proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Park University, and his master’s degree and PhD in analytical chemistry from Kansas State University. Fred spent his career in the chemical industry, working for Dow Chemical in Michigan; Celanese Research Company in New Jersey; and the U.S. Patent Office in Virginia. He raised his family in New Jersey, later moving to Virginia, and eventually retiring to Connecticut in 2004. In Fred’s free time, he made innovative ceramics. In addition to his wife, Stephanie-Anne, he is survived by two sons, Benjamin David Zitomer and his wife, Jenny of Brooklyn, New York; William Joseph Zitomer and his wife, Rebecca of Wrentham, Massachusetts; and two grandchildren, Michael Daniel Zitomer and Alexis Ray Zitomer. He was predeceased by son, Michael Aaron Zitomer, and brother, Daniel Zitomer. Family and friends will gather in Fred’s memory on Sunday, October 15, 2017 from noon to 2 p.m. at Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor, Connecticut, followed by burial with military honors in Palisado Cemetery, Windsor.
