The First Step

Essex County has owned the Riker Hill Art Park since 1973. When the county purchased it from the federal government, the barracks at the former Nike base were in deplorable condition. Most had no electricity, heat, or utilities. Some were missing pieces of the roof. A cadre of artists used sweat equity and turned the ramshackle buildings into usable art studios, where impressive works have been created. They didn’t – and they still do not – have landscapers or maintenance men to keep their site in shape. Over the years, wear and tear have taken their toll.
