Hold Funeral Services For Former Ad Director

George Weiss, former advertising director of the West Essex Tribune, died August 18. Funeral services were held Monday, August 20, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung, followed by interment at the Hebrew Cemetery of Samptown in South Plainfield. Mr. Weiss was predeceased by his wife of 29 years, Betty Bunin Weiss, who died in 1985; and his brother, Herbert, who died four days before him, on August 14. He is survived by his daughter, Laurie Ann Weiss-Braunstein (Mark); his son, Michael Lawrence Weiss (Cindy); three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and his significant other of more than 30 years, Juliette Ratner. Mr. Weiss was advertising director for the West Essex Tribune from 1953 to 1974, and director of planning and development for Metro Associated Services in New York City from 1974 to 1987. He received numerous awards from the New Jersey Press Association (NJPA) for his advertising campaigns while at the Tribune. He held various positions in the NJPA, including stints as president and cochairman of the annual NJPA conventions. While at Metro, he traveled the U.S. and Canada, giving seminars to newspaper advertising staff. In retirement, along with longtime friend and neighbor Joe Nagy, he operated Channel 35 cable access TV station in Fanwood until 2014. He and Nagy were named Volunteers of the Year in Fanwood in the 2000s, for their work at Channel 35 TV. Mr. Weiss also produced video productions on the Central Railroad of New Jersey, the Rahway Valley Railroad, and the Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood. Raised in Plainfield, he married his wife, Betty, in 1955. They resided in Elizabeth, Plainfield, and Middlesex, then in Fanwood for 50 years. He moved to Herndon, Virginia, in 2015, where he lived until his death. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that, in accordance with Mr. Weiss’ wishes, donations may by made to one’s local animal rescue or shelter facility.
