Elizabeth (Liz) Maria Van de Vaarst died peacefully at her home in Livingston, New Jersey, on Thursday, August 23, 2018. Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Engels. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she resided in Livingston all of her life. She was graduated from Grover Cleveland High School and then attended Martland Medical Center in Newark, where she obtained her RN. During her time at Martland, she met her soul mate, Herman C. Van de Vaarst (Skip). The two were married in 1959 and shared almost 59 years together and raised three children. In recent years, Elizabeth pursued her love of water color painting. Elizabeth was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a talented artist and a good friend. She will be missed. She was pre-deceased in death by her parents and her middle child, Joseph L. Van de Vaarst. She is survived by her loving husband, Skip; her oldest son, Herman Jeffrey Van de Vaarst (Jane) of Woodbridge, Virginia; her youngest child, Katrina Slavey (Robert) of West Point, Virginia; and two granddaughters, Tuppence S. Van de Vaarst of Maynooth, Ireland and Cambria-Anne S. Van de Vaarst of Rockville, Maryland. Visitation was held Sunday, August 26, at Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Avenue, Roseland, New Jersey. A funeral service was held Monday, August 27, in the funeral home, with interment following at Hollywood Memorial Park, 1500 Stuyvesant Avenue, Union, New Jersey.
