Helen Korzun passed away on Friday, November 2, 2018 in Green Hill assisted living facility in West Orange. Helen was born August 10, 1921 in Newark to Zygmont and Catherine Gorbocezewski. Music was an important part of Helen’s life and she became an accomplished violinist and pianist at an early age. During World War II, she was honored to play violin and conduct the New York Russian chorus groups for US and foreign dignitaries at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall in New York City; and at Symphony Hall in Newark. After high school, Helen worked at RCA in the Accounting Department and later at the Edison Factory. In 1944, Helen married John T. Korzun and lived in Orange before moving to Livingston in 1955. While raising their children, Helen taught private piano and violin lessons. She later attended college and graduated cum laude from Kean State College in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. She taught in the Livingston school system as a substitute for 35 years, enjoying all aspects of teaching students K through 12, and specializing in music. Helen played violin with the Livingston Symphony Orchestra for 34 years, often being honored as concert mistress. She also enjoyed playing in the Montclair Operetta Company performing in a variety of musical productions. Helen has been a member of the Livingston Methodist Church since 1955. She was a scholarship recipient from the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Her interests included music, walking, reading, knitting and swimming. Predeceased by her husband, John T. Korzun, in 2001, she is survived by her children Joan (Robert), Linda ,and Ronald (Ann). She was the cherished grandmother of five granddaughters and the loving great-grandmother of six great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be on Thursday, November 8 at 10 a.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston. Afterwards, interment will be at Hollywood Cemetery in Union. Visitation was held on Wednesday, November 7.
