Who Will Be Our Next Council Member?

News Staff's picture

Following the formal resignation of councilman Michael Silverman on January 1, the Livingston Democratic Committee must, within 15 days of that resignation, select three nominees to fill the vacant seat. We are inching closer to that first hurdle; with a Township Council meeting scheduled for next Monday, January 14, we expect to hear more about those nominees at that time. The seat must then be filled by January 30, and the newlyselected Council member will hold the position through 2019. A selection of a candidate to fill the remainder of the term, one year, will be determined through an election this coming November.

Submissions to be considered for the seat replacing Silverman were to be made by New Year’s Eve, and we hope the committee has received, and will strongly consider, a diverse group of candidates. We are pleased with the work done by our four current Council members, but, through no fault of their own, they are all straight white men. This does not preclude them from speaking and acting on issues that include equality, diversity, and inclusivity, but the township would certainly benefit from variety on the Council.
