Police, Animal Control Explain How to Deal With Foxes, Coyotes

Rise in Sightings: If you have seen a fox in your neighborhood in the last few weeks, you are not alone. But don’t worry; there’s no reason to panic, according to officials. Livingston’s police department and animal control have been inundated with calls and reports of “wild animals” roaming through township streets and backyards. Calls have specifically concerned sightings of foxes and coyotes. Animal Control Officer Jim Salvadore said these sightings are nothing out of the ordinary, and while residents should always use caution, they should not be concerned. “It’s the busiest time of the year. All the mammals in town are having their young and are very active,” Officer Salvadore said. “But humans are not prey to a fox. If you see a fox that you think is following you, it’s just being cautious and protecting its den. They’re keeping an eye on you, just as cautious of us as we are of them. With any wildlife, you should be careful and use precaution. If you see a young fox, know that there is a mother that will protect it.
