Editor’s Note: In his weekly articles for the Tribune, Jeff Friedman, founder and director of the Livingston Philanthropies, Inc., has, over the summer, been highlighting many of LPI’s distribution partners. Here, he writes about the New Jersey Redevelopment Corporation, which aids individuals who have been newly released from prison and are re-entering society.     •    •    • By Jeff Friedman And, you’re finally out. Out of county jail or state prison, that is, and trying to keep it that way. It’s a tough road, as many of those released have no skills, little or no education, possible psychiatric and social interaction issues, a lack of decent interview clothes, and, in some cases, no family or no home – or neither. That’s where the New Jersey Redevelopment Corporation (NJRC) picks up the ball, and that’s why Livingston Philanthropies Inc. (LPI) is proud to call NJRC in Newark a distribution partner. The NJRC is a professional job and training procurement agency with a sensitivity to the unique needs that returning citizens have in finding and retaining quality employment. Gainful employment is the most critical aspect of post-prison re-entry. Job training, employment counseling, as well as employment placement programs, are examples of the essential tools provided by the NJRC for effective reintegration and workforce development. LPI recognizes the good work of NJRC and is supportive of helping those who were incarcerated find a job and a path back to the community. One of our ninth season priorities is to continue providing clothing and toiletries to assist NJRC clients. All of our efforts are made possible by generous Livingston residents, of course. In closing, I’d like to quote Franklin D. Roosevelt, who said, “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”     •    •    • Livingston Philanthropies, which runs a seasonal coat drive year-round, collects travel-sized toiletries, men’s dresswear, diapers in sizes 4, 5 and 6, cosmetics, socks, and other items for the homeless. Donations may be dropped at the offices of the West Essex Tribune, 495 South Livingston Avenue, next to ShopRite. The Livingston-based charity is also in need of an SUV or van to make deliveries, having far “outgrown” the use of volunteers’ vehicles. Those who would like to contribute to LPI’s Vehicle Fund can do so by credit card on its website at njhomeless.org; through Paypal at paypal.me/lpinj;
