New signage for bicyclists and motorists on Falcon Road has left some in town confused at how to properly navigate the roadway. Lines direct bicyclists to travel in the center of the roadway as opposed to the side.
Livingston Police Chief Gary Marshuetz explained that these shared-lane arrows, or “sharrows,” are indicators for bicyclists and motorists to share the roadway. Sharrows are used on roads that are too narrow to fit a bike lane. Falcon Road, particularly with the street parking also on the roadway, fits this bill.
In order for the township to fulfill its Master Plan and the complete streets initiative – allowing motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians to easily navigate throughout town – these narrow streets must have instructions for how bicyclists and motorists should traverse the roadway.
