Mary Virginia Weber was born in 1928 in El Paso, Texas, the daughter of Kathleen (Bernardin) and Edward Habbe. “Ginny” was raised by her mother and stepfather, Harry Bissell, whose career took the family to Riverside, Palm Springs, and Coronado, California; Atlanta, Georgia; Elizabeth, New Jersey; and White Plains, New York.
As a young child, she discovered her passion for reading, which remained with her through the rest of her life.
Ginny attended Good Council High School in White Plains and Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, graduating in 1948. She was soon hired as a production assistant at Time-Life in New York City.
Ginny married Kenneth Weber in 1951. Following his graduation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), they moved to Louisville, Kentucky to begin his career with DuPont. Over the ensuing years, Ginny and Ken lived in Delaware three times, as well as Michigan; Londonderry, Northern Ireland; South Carolina; Virginia; North Carolina; and Livingston, New Jersey, where the family finally settled with their three sons. In Livingston, she worked for many years as a teacher’s aide at Circle Nursery School and later at Rainbow Nursery School in nearby Roseland.
Upon retirement, Ginny and Ken moved to Toms River, New Jersey, and then to Arbor Glen, now Laurel Circle, a retirement community in Bridgewater, New Jersey. She was very active there, including as a greeter at the front desk, working in the gift shop, assisting with the in-house newsletter, co-conducting a writers’ group among the residents, organizing the monthly religious program, and serving on the residents’ board.
In 2015, Ginny suffered a stroke that stole her mobility. She spent her final years reading virtually every book in the Laurel Circle library, being well cared for by the skilled nursing staff of Laurel Circle’s Holly Center, and enjoying visits from her family and friends.
Ginny Weber lived an interesting, well-traveled life, and passed away on March 18 as the proud, much-loved matriarch of the Weber family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken, in 2002, and is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Dana, Doug and Marianne, Andy and Jill; seven granddaughters, Danielle (Brendan) Gross, Kate (Nick) DeTrempe, and Marissa, Sarah, Mackenzie, Delanie, and Erin Weber; and three great-granddaughters, Lily and Penny Gross, and Cora DeTrempe. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sally Jameison; several nieces; and a nephew.
