On Monday, governor Phil Murphy announced that all New Jersey school facilities will remain closed for the remainder of the school year in the ongoing effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. His decision about school-sponsored summer programs and extended school year services for students with disabilities will be forthcoming.
The decision was not unexpected, following New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s school closure decision last Friday. New Jersey now joins more than 45 states and Washington, D.C. that have announced school closures through at least June.
Organizations including the New Jersey Education Association, the New Jersey School Boards Association, and administrators’ groups, had urged Murphy to keep school buildings closed.
