Ruth J. Cross

Ruth Joanne Cross (née Chatterton), age 97, of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 3, 2020. She was born June 18, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY. Ruth was kind, generous, loving and cared deeply about the welfare of her family, friends and neighbors. A private graveside service was held at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, Maine. Ruth proudly served her country during World War II as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy. For over two decades, she worked with the North Jersey Blood Center as a phlebotomist. She was also a nurse’s aide and a certified home nurse. Earlier in her career, she was the executive secretary to the director of the Livingston Public Library for 13 years. While at this position, Ruth was chosen to be the hospitality chairwoman for the New Jersey Library Association. A resident of Livingston for 66 years, Ruth loved her community. She was a member of St. Philomena’s Roman Catholic Church for almost seven decades and was extremely generous with her time. Over the years, she was a Girl Scout leader and a school crossing guard, and she volunteered with the Red Cross and various other organizations. In 1966, Temple Beth Shalom named her Woman of the Year. She loved spending time with her friends, taking vacations with her family at Webb Lake in Maine and had a good sense of humor. Ruth was predeceased by her beloved husband, Donald L. Cross; her parents, Frank and Loretta Chatterton (née Halliday); and her sisters, Loretta and Nancy. She is survived by her devoted children: her daughter, Kathy Schulze and son-in-law Craig, and son David Cross and daughter-in-law Jeanne, and her loving granddaughter, Kara Schulze. A memorial will not be held at this time due to COVID-19. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Red Cross. Arrangements are under the direction of Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston, New Jersey. ...
