Township Manager Explains Garbage Collection Contract

This past week, Livingston began its new garbage collection contract, with Recycle Track Systems (RTS). “Somewhat predictably, there were a few hiccups,” Township Manager Barry Lewis explained about the first week with the new garbage collector. Complaints from residents included different route times, missed pickups, and the change in price for rear-yard pickup. Formerly, the township had used Waste Industries to collect garbage, but after the contract was set to expire at the end ofAugust, the township was legally obligated to put it back out to bid and take the lowest responsible offer, which was RTS. The contract with Waste Industries had already included two two-year extensions, the maximum permitted by law.
