Superintendent Steps Down

School may be out for the summer, but the internal workings of the school district have not slowed down since classes ended. Prior to last week, much of the recent discourse coming from Livingston Public Schools concerned questions about the wait list for AP courses at the high school. There is certainly more to come from that, but the matter now sits on the back burner (along with other continued concerns, including random student alcohol testing at school sporting events), following the sudden resignation of superintendent Chris Steffner at the Wednesday, July 25, Board of Education meeting.

Diversity Concert

Those saddened that the Diversity Festival was not part of this year’s Youth Appreciation Celebration (formerly Youth Appreciation Week) received good news at Monday’s Township Council conference meeting. A new diversity-focused music festival will take its place this fall at the West Essex YMCA.

Connected Trails

At the Monday, July 23, Township Council conference meeting, Rich Cornell, chairman of the Trails and Greenways Committee, presented a plan to establish a connected series of trails around Livingston’s 14 square miles. The plan would connect the township’s existing trails and incorporate use of the Passaic River.

We believe this is a fantastic idea that our residents would make great use of should it come to fruition.

Up In Smoke

At Monday’s Township Council meeting, an ordinance was passed to Livingston’s general zoning requirements that will make it difficult for retail businesses with the primary focus of e-cigarettes (or “vaping”) to open in town. The ordinance was first proposed last month and passed this week by a three to one vote of the Council. Councilman Shawn Klein was absent at Monday’s meeting, while Councilman Michael Silverman was the lone member in opposition to the ordinance.

Summer Fun Continues

Livingston recently celebrated another spectacular Fourth of July on the Oval, with residents enjoying a full calendar of activities. While rain threatened to quell excitement early on, the weather held throughout the day and the crowd continued to grow leading up to the fantastic fireworks display that evening. Attendance seemingly rises each year (check out some of the photos in this issue of the Tribune for proof), as residents bring their friends and families from outside the township to learn about all we offer in celebration of Independence Day.

“Putting Out a Damn Paper”

Anyone who has ever worked in a newsroom has thought about what happened last week at the Capital Gazette, happening at their workplace. On Thursday, June 28, a gunman entered the offices of the Maryland community newspaper and opened fire, murdering five employees and wounding several others. To think the same could not happen elsewhere in this country, like right here at the West Essex Tribune, would be naïve.

Traffic Survey

Last week’s editorial asked residents to write to us about which roadways in town they find the most dangerous, troublesome, and frustrating. In the days since, we have received enough feedback to fill this entire paper. At press time, the responses continued to fill our inbox, and we will read every one of them.
