Livingston recently celebrated another spectacular Fourth of July on the Oval, with residents enjoying a full calendar of activities. While rain threatened to quell excitement early on, the weather held throughout the day and the crowd continued to grow leading up to the fantastic fireworks display that evening. Attendance seemingly rises each year (check out some of the photos in this issue of the Tribune for proof), as residents bring their friends and families from outside the township to learn about all we offer in celebration of Independence Day.

Anyone who has ever worked in a newsroom has thought about what happened last week at the Capital Gazette, happening at their workplace. On Thursday, June 28, a gunman entered the offices of the Maryland community newspaper and opened fire, murdering five employees and wounding several others. To think the same could not happen elsewhere in this country, like right here at the West Essex Tribune, would be naïve.

It’s a very special day for many of our township families, as the Livingston High School Class of 2018 will receive their diplomas Thursday afternoon.

We wanted to extend a heartfelt congratulations to all of our graduates on a job well done. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for all of you.

Livingston residents and businesses received a letter this week asking for financial support for our Fire Department. The Livingston Fire Department has been serving the township since 1921. The year 2017 will mark the 97th anniversary of the allvolunteer Department providing service to Livingston. It is closing in on a century of protecting the lives and property of Livingston residents.

Last week’s editorial asked residents to write to us about which roadways in town they find the most dangerous, troublesome, and frustrating. In the days since, we have received enough feedback to fill this entire paper. At press time, the responses continued to fill our inbox, and we will read every one of them.

While the West Essex Tribune’s regular readership will not notice any changes to this week’s issue, some are picking up our paper for the first time. This week’s edition is a TMC (Total Market Coverage). This is the second of three times this year that we will send our newspaper to every residence in Livingston. In the last few issues of the Tribune, we have reported on several motor vehicle accidents in town. Several cars were totaled, and while some people walked away with bumps and bruises, one resident suffered fatal injuries after her vehicle collided with a bus. Like most busy towns, Livingston has some roadways that can be dangerous for motorists and pedestrians. But which streets are the worst offenders, the ones that drivers should be extra-vigilant while navigating?

At the start of the Tuesday, May 22, Township Council conference meeting, about a dozen Livingston veterans addressed the Council members, asking them to refrain from hosting events at Memorial Park at the Oval, other than ones honoring veterans who did not return home from war.

There is a memorial area, displayed for all to see, at the entrance to the Oval, on the “island” between the driveways, with its plaques paying respect to the 29 Livingston residents who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

On Monday, the intersection of West Northfield Road and Hillside Avenue was closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. for milling and paving. The work was certainly essential – we need to maintain our roadways, specifically at major intersections – but it caused a traffic nightmare for many during the morning commute. Sure, road work is typically an inconvenience whenever it occurs, but why start at 7 a.m. on a Monday?
