Centenarian to Receive Bronze Star 73+ Years After Earning It in WWII

World War II naval veteran and lifelong 100-year Livingston resident Wilbur Hoffman has been waiting nearly 74 years to receive the medal he earned in 1944. On September 29, his long wait will be over.

He will finally be presented with his medal during a ceremony at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 29, at 10 a.m. In attendance will be family members, congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, a representative of the Department of the Navy, and members of the Navy Color Guard.

Four Face Marijuana Charges In Traffic Stops

Four individuals are facing drug charges following two traffic stops by Livingston Police officers last week.

The first stop occurred at 8:35 a.m. on Thursday, September 6, on West Mt. Pleasant Avenue. An officer stopped a 2003 Saab, driven by Athaniel Pierre, 24, of West Orange, for an equipment violation and failure to maintain a lane.

Interim Superintendent Addresses Social Media, Meeting Practices

Interim superintendent of schools James O’Neill opened the Board of Education meeting on September 5 with a prepared statement about conduct and practices at Board meetings, “to help ensure that we have appropriate tone of the meeting going forward.” He also addressed the issue of responding to social media posts.

For the first time, this meeting agenda included a reminder about the district’s policies about civility and recording of Board meetings. Also for the first time, announced Pam Chirls, president of the school board, cameras had been installed and were recording the meeting. The district would make the tape available within 72 hours, or three business days, she said.

That’s why we can finally request donations from those who want to assist in “providing for the poor, homeless, and disenfranchised.” And that’s why our recently announced fundraising initiative is moving forward in full gear.

After a few months of assuming the role in an acting capacity, Gary Marshuetz was officially sworn in as Chief of the Livingston Police Department at Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Township Council.

The September 4 meeting was held in the Livingston High School auditorium both to accommodate the crowd and because it offered air conditioning. The meeting was initially scheduled to be held in the Senior/Community Center but was moved due to temperatures exceeding 90 degrees.

Farm To Table Outing and Cooking Class

FARM TO TABLE OUTING AND COOKING CLASS: Participants in the Arc of Essex County’s adult respite program shopped for fresh fruits and vegetables; took a farm-to-table cooking class; and prepared a meal at the Arc’s day program in Orange. The Arc is a Livingston-based nonprofit that provides support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Police Arrest Robbery Suspect Following Foot Pursuit

Livingston police captured a suspect in a strong armed robbery incident following a foot chase along East Mt. Pleasant Avenue.

On Saturday, September 1, at 7:56 p.m., Livingston Police responded to a disturbance in the lot outside the 7-Eleven convenience store at 6160 Town Center Way. Upon arrival, they learned that a 13 year old male from Livingston had been the victim of a strong armed robbery. The boy was not identified by police.

First Aid Squad Opens 2018 Fund Drive

The Livingston First Aid Squad has opened its annual fund drive. The campaign, conducted by mail, is the Squad’s only formal fundraiser for the year.

The cost of operating the First Aid Squad remains at more than $100,000 per year, said fund drive chairman Scott Maynard. “We receive no outside funding from any government agency. All of our funding comes from donations from our residents and local businesses,” he noted.

Sept. 11 Ceremony Will Honor Victims

Livingston’s annual September 11 Ceremony of Remembrance will be held on Tuesday, September 11, at the September 11 Living Memorial Garden in Memorial Park. The program will be held at 6:30 p.m., rain or shine.

Livingston Boy Scouts will serve as honor guards and lead the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a performance by the Livingston High School choral group, directed by Joshua Salzman, singing the National Anthem. The Chorus will also perform Let There Be Peace on Earth, You’ll Never Walk Alone, and God Bless America during the program. Following the invocation by Rabbi Clifford M. Kulwin of Temple B’nai Abraham, mayor Ed Meinhardt will give welcoming remarks as well as a description of the garden.
