National Night Out to Include Many Family-Oriented Events

Livingston’s National Night Out will take place on August 7. The national event, explains Offi cer Kevin Mullaney of the Livingston Police Department’s Community Policing Unit, is designed to strengthen neighborhoods through police-community partnerships. “The goal is to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, and build support and participation in local anti-crime programs,” he said. “Most importantly, it represents the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make many neighborhoods safer places to live.”

Waste Industries Now Collects Recycling; Zones, Pick-up Schedules Unchanged

As of yesterday, Wednesday, August 1, Livingston’s recycling is being collected by Waste Industries, LLC, which is also the township’s garbage collection vendor.

Weekly recycling pick-ups by previous vendor Giordano Companies ceased at the end of the day on Tuesday, July 31. However, the change will not affect what items residents should leave out for recycling collection or when.

Donations “Heat-Up” This Summer for Livingston Philanthropies

It’s summertime, and while many residents are on vacation, the volunteers of Livingston Philanthropies have been hard at work, said Philanthropies founder and director Jeff Friedman, “donating their time and vehicles for the greater good of society. I’m more than thankful for their participation, as Livingston residents are keeping the donations strong and steady.”
Last week, volunteer and Livingston business owner Neil Greco delivered a huge load of family clothing, including 70 coats, to Willing Heart Community Care Center in Newark. “Neil happily took his large, shiny new pick-up truck, which was just filled with necessities for the ‘poor, homeless, and disenfranchised,’ ” said Friedman.

Marshuetz Named Next Police Chief; Will Assume Position in September

At the end of the Monday, July 23, Township Council conference meeting, township manager Barry Lewis formally announced his intention to hire Gary Marshuetz as the Livingston Police Department’s next chief.

Marshuetz was recently promoted from Captain to Acting Chief when Chief Craig Handschuch announced his intention to retire at the end of the summer. Handschuch has been using accumulated paid time off this summer leading up to his retirement at the end of August.

Fire Department Responds To Downed Wires

During the course of a quiet week during which most of the calls were false alarms, the Livingston Fire Department responded to two reports of downed wires.

On Sunday, July 22, fire officials went to 31 Knollwood Drive on a report of wires hanging low in the roadway. They found the wires to be telecommunications wires, and notified Verizon of the problem.

Livingston students are using some of their summer break to explore new ideas, refresh their academic knowledge, and refocus on their personal interests at the the Livingston Public Schools Summer Academy.

The Academy is held at Livingston High School and offers small, intensive classes that range from academic courses to enrichment and artistic instruction.

The gift bags are slated for distribution at St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark, where the Lombardo siblings will also assist stocking the shelves in the food pantry.

Township Council Approves New Diversity Festival, Discusses Connecting Trails, Door-to-Door Sellers

In a two-hour Township Council conference meeting, held Monday, July 23, at Town Hall, the Council approved a new diversity concert and discussed connecting walking trails within the township among other business.

Diversity Festival

Susan Burkenbush and Alan Karpas, on behalf of the Youth Appreciation Committee, West Essex YMCA, and the Livingston Committee for Diversity and Inclusion, requested the Council allocate $5,000 for a “Love+Unity Diversity Festival,” to be held this September at the YMCA.

Livingston Summer Concert Series Concludes July 29 with B Street Band

The 2018 Livingston Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Regal Bank, will conclude this Sunday, July 29, with the B-Street Band, a Bruce Springsteen tribute band. The concert will be held at the Gazebo on the Oval, and will begin at 7 p.m.

Picnic food and lawn games will be available. Those attending are encouraged to take along blankets or lawn chairs to sit on. In the event of inclement weather, the show will take place in the auditorium at Livingston High School.
