For the month of July, the Livingston Library’s display case is featuring the works of local artist Linda Zamer.

Linda’s interest in art was inspired by several artistically talented family members, especially a favorite cousin who went on to become an accomplished art director.

“I remember being awed by watching him work and then seeing the finished product,” recalled Zamer. “His room/studio, with so many brushes, paints, equipment and completed artworks, is still fresh in my memory.”

For the third consecutive year, Livingston High School students participated in the New Jersey Envirothon. This year’s event was held at Boy Scout Camp Grice on May 5 in Elmer.

The Envirothon is a “hands-on, natural resources problem solving competition.” Schools from across the state competed in student teams of five to complete tests in five stations: Wildlife, Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, and Current Issue. Each station comprised a hands-on and written test, which all team members had to complete as a group. There was also a Team Presentation station where teams had to present a solution to a scenario based off of this year’s current issue, which was “Managing Rangelands.”

Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest New Jersey (JVS) broke both attendance and fundraising records at its annual Taste and Toast gala held on June 20 at the Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange. The event attracted more than 300 attendees and generated more than $400,000 in corporate sponsorships and charitable donations. In addition, more than $25,000 was raised during the event itself — and matched, dollar-for-dollar, by presenting sponsor Valley National Bank — to acquire and operate a van that will transport JVS clients to and from internships and volunteer positions at businesses and community-based organizations located throughout Essex County.

During the course of an otherwise quiet week, Livingston firefighters went to assist at the scene of a twocar accident on Wednesday night, June 27.

According to fire officials, the accident occurred at about 10:45 p.m. at 88 West Mt. Pleasant Avenue. As a result of a two-car collision, a tree was hit and came down into the roadway. One male occupant was trapped in a vehicle after the driver’s side door was smashed in. Firefighters popped the door open using irons. The two people involved in the accident refused medical attention at the scene.

HEAT WAVE RELIEF: With the mercury hitting the 100-degree mark by about 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, making a big splash at Haines Memorial Pool was one way to cool off. Residents turned out in large numbers at the town pool, including this group of youngsters enjoying fun and friendship as they jumped into the water.

The 2018 Livingston Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Regal Bank, will continue this Sunday, July 8, with Beginnings, a Chicago tribute band.

The series features live musical performances every Sunday evening in July from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park gazebo.

Each week features a different genre of music, including doo-wop, Big Band arrangements, ’80s hits, and tributes to the band Chicago and Bruce Springsteen.

At a special meeting held Thursday evening, June 28, the Livingston Planning Board approved an application by Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) for minor site plan approval and variances. The application amended prior approvals to modify and expand the existing Emergency Department; and proposed reconfiguration of the existing parking area in front of the entrance to the Radiation and Oncology Department.

The application also sought variances for signage. The applicant plans to add approximately 3,290 square feet to the Emergency Department. The construction will expand certain waiting areas and create a new vestibule, public toilet, patient holding area, and additional rooms. Also proposed are certain exterior building improvements, including façade improvements and the addition of a roof-top screen to hide new mechanical equipment.

The Livingston Police Department arrested three individuals for drug related charges last week.

At about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, officers stopped a vehicle on South Orange Avenue.

The driver, William Mayes, 46, of Elizabeth, was charged with driving while his license was suspended, having a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, and possession of drug paraphernalia in a motor vehicle.

The Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. continues to collect small-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, lotion, razors, tooth brushes, tooth paste, mouth wash, cotton swabs, soap, women’s pads and diapers. The collection continues year ’round, noted founder and director Jeff Friedman.
“Staying in a hotel while vacationing? Cruising, perhaps? Those cute, complimentary toiletries represent a treasure trove for our less fortunate brothers and sisters living out on the streets or in homeless shelters, just minutes away!” he said.
Friedman noted that Livingston Philanthropies is also running a continuing Cosmetics and Makeup Challenge. “You got ‘em, the ‘poor, homeless and disenfranchised’ need ’em,’ ” he said, quoting his organization’s mission statement. “Looking one’s best, unfortunately, can be reduced to economics. All beauty items are appreciated, please.”

The sun was shining on Livingston High School during the Class of 2018 graduation ceremony, which was held last Thursday, June 21, on the athletic field. 498 students received their diplomas under beautiful blue skies, as friends and family looked on. Inside this edition of the Tribune is our annual graduation section, a keepsake piece featuring candid photos of the commencement ceremony and pictures of all of the graduates, along with the text of the speeches made.
