The Pride flag was raised on Wednesday, May 30 at the Livingston Oval when the Livingston Committee for Diversity and Inclusion hosted the third annual township LGBTQ+ Pride flag raising ceremony. The flag will fly over Livingston during LGBT Pride Month in June.

More than 50 people attended the flag raising and the hour-long program led by Susan Berkenbush, chairwoman of the Committee.

The Board of Education meeting on June 4 opened with a moment of silence for Pat Heller, a retired Livingston elementary school teacher who died on May 12.

During the voting portion of the meeting, the Board approved the purchase of five new school buses; an open campus for Livingston High School seniors; a first reading of a new organizational chart; and made a number of personnel appointments.

All five Livingston Township Council candidates, two republican and three democrat, will advance to the General Election after winning their uncontested Primary Election races Tuesday.

Incumbent democratic Council candidates Rudy Fernandez, Shawn Klein, and mayor Ed Meinhardt received, 2,071, 2,044, and 2,027 votes, respectively.

The third annual Livingston Summerfest event will be held Sunday, June 10. The event will include children’s activities and a food truck festival, with vendors representing Thailand, Italy, Columbia, Mexico, Japan, Greece, China, Taiwan, Australia, Puerto Rico, Latin America and the United States of America.

The event will be held, rain or shine. In case of rain, the Livingston High School cafeteria will be open for seating; the trucks will be outside the door.

The Livingston Planning Board met on Tuesday, June 5, to re-hear a previous application, and opened a hearing on a new application.

Subdivision Approved – Again

The first application, for a minor subdivision with variances at 127 East Cedar Street, had been heard and closed on May 1; however, adequate notice had apparently not been provided to all neighbors within 200 feet of the property. Therefore, that hearing was deemed null and void, and had to be conducted a second time. Attorney Steve Geffner apologized for the error and said “it was done with no ill intent.”

Livingston’s response to Living-ston Philanthropies’ request for small size toiletries and new cosmetics has been “outstanding,” according to Jeff Friedman, founder and director of the charitable organization. The donations are continually made into gift bags for the poor, homeless and disenfranchised, in keeping with the non-profit’s mission statement.
Livingston Philanthropies is collecting new, small size toiletries and cosmetics. “Donations of hotel/travel sized shampoo, conditioner, soap, tooth brushes, tooth paste, mouth wash, deodorant, razors, cotton swabs, body wash, lotion, and baby diapers in sizes 4, 5, and 6, and more are badly needed right now” Friedman said.
In addition, Livingston Philanthropies is seeking donations of new, unopened cosmetics, including make-up, make up bags, lipstick, powder, lotion, nail polish, scents and similar items.

Last Friday, Livingston High School traveled back in time, and a newly-posted music video takes viewers on a journey through those hallways for the student body’s latest Lip Dub. Then now-annual video features students singing over, or “dubbing” classic songs as they traverse school grounds.

Students Matthew Feresten, Adriana Franchino and Sabrina Katz, members of the LHS’s TV crew, created and produced this year’s video, working since the start of the school year to ensure it was a success. The trio first met last June at Starbucks to start brainstorming video ideas.

Capping a 40-year career with the Livingston Police Department, including his last ten years as Chief of Police, Craig Handschuch has announced he will retire this summer.

Handschuch informed the township this week that he plans to retire, effective September 1. He will complete his tenth year as Chief of Police on August 31. Earlier that month, on August 7, he will surpass 40 years of service in the department.

90-YEAR-OLD COMPLETES FIVE MILE RUN: In celebration of her 90th birthday, longtime Livingston resident Marie (DeMarco) Esposito completed the Spring Lake Five Mile Run on Saturday, May 26. Running alongside were three of her four children and two grandchildren. “My mom walks three miles a day, she eats healthy and always exercised some,” said AnneMarie O’Keefe of Livingston, “The family encouraged her to go on the run to commemorate her birthday.” Esposito, a resident of Livingston for more than 50 years, raised her four children - AnneMarie, Dianne, George, and Paul, in Livingston. “I felt great,” she said. “I just kept going; it was a lot of fun.”
