Extrication Was Required

EXTRICATION WAS REQUIRED in the aftermath of a single car accident on Laurel Avenue on Monday night, April 9, at about 11:30 p.m. According to the police report, Jane K. Chong of Sycamore Terrace was traveling southbound on Laurel when her Toyota wagon crossed the double yellow line, struck a curbed median on the corner of Brown Court, and then struck a light post and street sign at the intersection.

Republican Brandon Minde Enters Township Council Race

For the first time in several years, there will be a contested race for a Livingston Council seat in November’s general election. Brandon Minde, a Republican, announced his bid for a Council seat on Monday. All Council members are currently Democrats. Incumbents Rudy Fernandez, Shawn Klein, and mayor Ed Meinhardt all have terms expiring at the start of 2019 and have filed petitions to seek reelection.

First Responders Meet Resident They Revived

Ten of Livingston’s first responders reunited this Sunday with a man they revived after he went into cardiac arrest in January.

Members of the Livingston Police Department, the Livingston First Aid Squad, and MONOC paramedics responded to a cardiac arrest call at an Amherst Place home on January 22. 

Bernadette Gonzalez said her boyfriend, Pete McDonald, 60, had suddenly collapsed inside her home. Police arrived to find him unresponsive and in cardiac arrest, according to First Aid Squad member Michael Barnhard.

Youth Appreciation Week Changes Name

Youth Appreciation Week, the annual event that has been held in Livingston in May for more than 20 years, is changing its name and timeline.

“The new name is ‘Youth Appreciation Celebration,’ when Livingston celebrates its youth and their accomplishments,” said Alan Karpas, president of Healthy Community/Healthy Youth (HCHY), which organizes the event.

Livingston Philanthropies, Livingston’s local, home-grown charity, continues operation through the spring months after completing our seventh coat drive season. The focus is now on hotel- or travel-sized toiletries of all kinds, new cosmetics, and diapers sizes 4, 5, and 6.
Livingston residents, Philanthropies volunteers, and all those who donated, are proof that community volunteerism is alive and effective right here in town.

Latest Storm Drops Another 6" of Snow

After four nor’easters in three weeks – one of them coming after the official start of spring – yet another storm dropped significant snow on Livingston on Monday morning, April 2.

According to Department of Public Works (DPW) superintendent Mike Anello, Monday’s storm dropped another 5.5 to six inches of snow on unpaved surfaces, while paved surfaces saw accumulations of 2.5 to three inches. Warmer temperatures kept more of the snow from sticking to roadways, he said.

William Taylor is Named Unsung Hero

Livingston High School senior William Taylor was recently honored by the New Jersey School Boards Association-Essex County as part of its “Unsung Heroes Student Recognition Program.” Thirty students from Essex County were recognized at the ceremony, which was held at Liberty Middle School in West Orange.

The awards recognize students “who make outstanding contributions to their schools and communities, but who may be overlooked under traditional student recognition guidelines. Honorees may have overcome academic or personal challenges, modeled good citizenship, or shown a spirit or quiet strength that inspires others.”

Leashed Dog Attacks, Kills Another Dog; Car Hits Utility Pole on Passaic Avenue

An investigation is underway after a dog was attacked and died from its injuries last week. Police are also investigating a car that crashed into a pole and an attempted burglary in this week’s police blotter.

Dog Attack

At about 1 p.m. on March 27, an individual was walking her two leashed dogs in the area of West Northfield Road and Winchester Road when she was approached by another individual with a dog on a leash, police said.

School District Finds Optimism In Student Survey of Substance Use

School superintendent Christina Steffner presented a rather upbeat look at substance use among Livingston youth, as documented by the 2018 ADAPT (the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team) Youth Survey.

The 31-item survey asked for student reports about the use, perceived harm, parent and peer disapproval, availability and access associated with a variety of drugs.
