Discuss Random Drug Testing at Public Forum

Some 100 people attended an open public forum on the subject of random drug testing, a concept currently being explored by the Livingston school district. The forum was organized by residents Mike Ramer and Sasha Pailet Koff.
In opening the meeting, Ramer noted that he wanted to “give the community the opportunity to speak and express their views,” and “explore solutions.” Koff emphasized that the forum was “community-led, not sponsored by the Board of Education, or the school administration.” She said that they organized the event after seeing parents leaving the school-sponsored forum “feeling frustrated about being able to engage in open dialogue.”

A possible gas leak was reported Tuesday afternoon at Across International, a machinery manufacturing firm at 111 Dorsa Avenue. Firefighters at the scene evacuated the building as a precaution. However, they found no gas leak, but rather, a natural gas odor of unknown origin, possibly connected to a sewer issue.

Coats for the Homeless

Article Image Alt Text

Livingston resident Lois Steinberg recently donated a big stack of winter coats and garments to Livingston Philanthropies. She is shown here during a private pick-up by Jeff Friedman, founder and director of the Livingston Philanthropies, which conducts a seasonal coat drive and collects toiletries and other items for the homeless throughout the year. “It’s already coat weather in the evening,” said Friedman. “Winter weather is just around the corner. With that in mind, we are requesting warm coats and winter accessories. We are also reaching out for diapers in sizes 4, 5, and 6, feminine hygiene pads, travel-size toiletries, and new cosmetics.  Also, there’s a big need for men’s dress attire. Donations may be dropped at the offices of Livingston Philanthropies partner, the West Essex Tribune, 495 South Livingston Avenue (next to ShopRite). Donations may also be left at Ascend Physical Therapy in Montclair; and at the chiropractic offices of Dr. Gary Hecht in Springfield.
