GIRL SCOUTS DONATE COOKIES

GIRL SCOUTS DONATE COOKIES: The local Girl Scout organization, the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ), donated ten cases of Girl Scout cookies to the Livingston Fire Department and First Aid Squad on Thursday, August 26. “These are cookies that were part of our donation to essential workers and are associated with the GSHNJ Cookie Relief Fund,” explained Mechelle Norton, interim director of product programs for GSHNJ. “The overstock of Girl Scout cookies was advertised in the New York Times in June, after which we began receiving donations of cookies for our essential workers. Cookies that were not backed by donations through the Cookie Relief Fund were donated from GSHNJ.” Shown here, Fire Chief Chris Mullin accepts the donated cookies.

Livingston Siblings Intern At India’s Cherlapally Prison

Siblings Nidhi Ladda and Raghav Ladda traveled to Hyderabad, India this summer to participate in a unique internship at the Cherlapally Central Prison. The city is in the south of India, in Telangana state.

They volunteered in a three-week social reform program designed to reduce recidivism and crime through cognitive behavioral development and training therapy. It is operated by the Unnati Reform Program and sponsored by ANTRIX-ISRO, an Indian government-owned company that operates under the Department of Space.

Nidhi, a senior at Livingston High School, and Raghav, a junior, volunteered in the 52nd “batch” of the program, which has been operating since 2013.

Livingston Sears Site To Reopen For Boosters

As of Wednesday morning, September 1, the Livingston Health Department has reported that a total of 2,339 Livingston residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the first case was recorded in mid-March of 2020. 89 of those residents have died as a result of the virus.

Compared to the same time last week, there are 24 new cases, with one additional death. This marks the first COVID death in Livingston in nearly three months. The last recorded death before this one was reported on June 2. In the past month, there have been 135 cases.

More than 5.585 million individuals in New Jersey are fully vaccinated as of Tuesday afternoon.

Booster shots will start to be available for the general public beginning on September 20. Recipients must be eight months removed from being fully vaccinated.

The Livingston Sears location is expected to reopen for booster shots on September 20.

Man Is Hospitalized After Car Strikes Tree

Man Is Hospitalized After Car Strikes Tree

An 80-year-old Livingston resident has been hospitalized for the past week after suffering a medical episode while driving his car and crashing into a tree.

At about 2:29 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25, the man suffered an apparent unspecified medical condition, causing him to lose control of his black Hyundai Elantra. Police declined to identify the man without asking permission from the family.

As a result of the medical episode, the man veered between roadways and lawns on Falcon Road, West Oakwood Avenue, and Brookside Place, before crashing into a tree near Canoe Brook on the lawn of a West Oakwood Avenue home.

The man was hospitalized for injuries sustained during the crash. He was initially in critical condition but was listed as stable as of Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

There was nothing suspicious about the accident; alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been involved, according to police.

Zoning Board Approves Seven Applications

The Livingston Zoning Board of Adjustment approved six residential applications and one commercial application at its August 24 meeting, pending formal adoption at a future time.

The meeting was held on Zoom and may be viewed on the town’s Facebook page, LivingstonTownshipNJ.

An application by Joseph and Stacy Moore and Todd Weinberger regarding a riparian zone on the property at 354 Beaufort Avenue was adjourned to the September 28 meeting.

Deck on Hillside Avenue

Shefali and Puneet Goel came before the Board seeking a ten foot rear yard setback variance to construct a new second story deck at 245 Hillside Avenue.

The proposed deck, 16 feet by 20 feet, will be the same size as the patio beneath it. The application was granted based on the shallowness of the property.

New Water/Sewer Rates in Effect

Township officials this week announced an increase in water and sewer rates.

“Livingston’s water and sewer facilities must be maintained and upgraded in order to continue to adequately serve residents,” explained Judith Heller, the township’s communications coordinator. “Preserving and improving Livingston’s infrastructure amidst rising demand have led to a necessary increase in water and sewer rates, which have not changed since 2015.”

New water and sewer rates are now in effect and can be found on the township website at livingstonnj.org/WaterSewerRates.

Another Unlocked Car is Stolen; ‘Lock It or Lose It’ Campaign Begins

Yet another unlocked car has been stolen in the township, reported Livingston Police this week.

An unlocked BMW was reported stolen from the driveway of a Rumson Road home on Sunday evening, August 22, between 6 and 7 p.m. The stolen vehicle was recovered in Elizabeth the following morning. At press time, the investigation is ongoing.

Lock It Or Lose It!

Recently the Livingston Police Department has initiated the “Lock It or Lose It” campaign. The crime prevention initiative is designed to help residents remember to secure their vehicles and the personal items located within those vehicles. In addition to its announcement in the Tribune, notice of the campaign has been posted on the Livingston Police Department’s social media page, and a mobile sign board has been put out into the community to help spread the word.
