Services Were Held For Dorothy Tylka, 89

Dorothy C. Tylka (Mankus) of Livingston died on Sunday, February 25. Born in Hyde Park, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Tylka was predeceased by her husband, John, in 2003; her brothers, Stanley, Walter, Chester, and Henry; and her sisters, Theresa and Mary. She is survived by her daughter, Bev Siffeti (Aman) of Livingston; as well as one granddaughter; and three greatgrandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Philomena Church in Livingston, or to the Livingston First Aid Squad. Arrangements were made by the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home.

Holocaust Survivor, Solomon Frankel, Dies

Solomon Joseph Frankel, formerly of Livingston, died on February 19 in Davenport, Florida. Born in Lodz, Poland in 1925 to Benjamin Frankel and Ida (Midlarz) Frankel, he and his family were part of the last deportation of Jews to Auschwitz in 1944. His mother died in the gas chamber and sister, Sara, died of typhus at Stutthof concentration camp. As electrical workers, Mr. Frankel and his father were sent to Friedland, a work camp that was part of Gross-Rosen concentration camp. The camp was liberated in 1945, and the two men lived in Feldafing, a displaced persons camp in Germany, until 1951, when they were able to secure passage to the United States. They settled in Newark and set up a radio and TV repair shop. Mr. Frankel took classes at Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT) and later established Frankel Electric Contracting, Mr. Frankel was deeply committed to Holocaust education and spoke in many schools around the country.

Helene Purcell

Helene Purcell passed away on Monday, February 26, 2018 in Livingston. Mrs. Purcell was a Business Teacher at Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair for many years. She was a member of the Catholic Teacher’s Association; the past President of the Essex Dove No. 251, the Benevolent Order of Does; Membership Vice-President of the Livingston Chapter of the American Association of University Women; President of the Livingston Ladies Bowling Team; and Vice-President and Treasurer of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus in Livingston. She was also Program Chairperson for the Livingston Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). Helene was married to the late William Purcell, Jr., and they lived in Livingston for 51 years. She is survived by several nieces and nephews: Charles J. Barbaz, Jr., and his wife, Clara, Jean Kulpa, Carol Binkowski, William Barbaz, Charles Barbaz, and Richard Purcell.

Graveside Services Held for Doris Burch

Former Livingston resident Doris Burch died Friday, February 2, at Arden Courts, Allentown, Pennsylvania, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 88 years old. A graveside service was held at Memory Gardens, Ephrata, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, February 7. Mrs. Burch was born in West Orange on February 8, 1929. After graduating from high school, she worked at Prudential Insurance Company in Newark. She lived in Livingston for many years before moving to Ephrata in 1986. Mrs. Burch was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Ken. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Harlan (Timothy) of Citra, Florida, and Janice Trocino (Gary) of Livingston; and one grandchild. The family has suggested the memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 617 Main Street, Hellertown, PA 18055 or to the Dachshund Rescue of Bucks County, 181 Gilbert Drive, Morrisville, PA 19067.

Memorial Gathering Held For Richard A. Gabel, 89

Richard A. Gabel of Livingston died Sunday, February 11, at the age of 89. A memorial gathering was held Saturday, February 17, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. Mr. Gabel grew up in Newark and lived in West Orange before settling in Livingston in 1966. He worked as a mechanical engineer for Atlantic Design Company in Newark for 40 years, and later opened his own business, PARR Design in Livingston. He was an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts and Indian Guides, and coached Little League. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Gabel was predeceased by his wife, Alice; his son, Richard A. Gabel Jr.; and his son-in-law, David Veriepe. He is survived by his children, Patricia Veriepe, and Robert Gabel and his wife, June; his sister, Dorothy Teebo; and six grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. The family has suggested that donations in Mr. Gabel’s name may be made to the West Essex YMCA.

Funeral Mass Offered For Dr. Thomas Liddy

Thomas J. Liddy, M.D., 85, died Tuesday, February 13, at his home in Livingston following a long illness. He was 85 years old. Viewings were held on Saturday at the Lawton-Turso Funeral Home in Hoboken and on Sunday at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston. A funeral Mass was offered Tuesday, February 20, at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Livingston, with entombment immediately following at the Gate of Heaven Chapel Mausoleum, East Hanover. Born in Morristown, Dr. Liddy was raised in Summit. He earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and served his residency and fellowship in pathology at National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1965, he moved to Livingston with his family, where he resided for 53 years. Dr. Liddy accepted a position as pathologist and was the first director of the hyperbaric unit at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. He later became director of pathology and laboratories at St.

Services Were Held For Dolores Shaw

Dolores M. Shaw, 90, a former resident of Livingston, died on February 10. A celebration of her life was held at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home on February 16. Mrs. Shaw was born in Newark and worked for Lord and Taylor in Millburn, earning its award for excellence in service in 1972. She was the wife of the late Marsden J. Shaw; the mother of Kathy (Hugh) Nielsen, Robert (Grace) Shaw, and Nancy (Jeff) Stier; the grandmother of five; the sister of Marlene (Harry) McFadden; and the sister-in-law of Yoland and Judy Hummel.

Mass at St. Raphael For Mary C. Centuori

Mary C. Centuori (nee Crisafi) of Warren, formerly of Livingston, died at her home on Friday, February 16. She was 91 years old. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Raphael Church in Livingston on Wednesday, February 21, followed by burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. Arrangements were by the Paul Ippolito Berkeley Memorial; to send condolences, visit ippolitofuneralhomes.com. Mrs. Centuori was born in East Orange. She had resided in Livingston for over 50 years, before moving to Warren one year ago. A graduate of Kean University, she taught in both the West Orange and Newark school districts. After a career in teaching, she worked as a real estate agent for Carano Realtors in West Orange for many years before retirement. In addition, she was a long-time trustee of the Livingston Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Centuori was predeceased by her husband, Dante A., in 1989; and by her brothers, Vincent and Joseph Crisafi.

Funeral Service Held For Murry Greene, 90

Murry Greene of Livingston, formerly of Union, died Friday, February 16, at the age of 90. A funeral service was held at the Bernheim-Apter- Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel of Livingston on Sunday, February 18, followed by interment at Beth David Cemetery, Kenilworth. Mr. Greene was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 5, 1927. In his senior year of high school, he moved to New Jersey to work in the family milk business, Tuscan Dairy. After graduating from high school, he attended Rutgers University for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served as a pharmacist’s mate during World War II. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Rutgers and was graduated in June of 1951. Mr. Greene then worked for Wyeth Lab in Madison, retiring after 50 years of service. He was a past Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias and former post Commander of the Jewish War Veterans. Predeceased by his wife of more than 50 years, Harriet, and by his son, Robert Ted Greene, Mr.
