Mass Offered Monday For Pasquale DeRogatis

Pasquale “Patty Boy” DeRogatis, 88, died on Wednesday, March 1, at his Livingston home. Funeral arrangements were by Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston. Born in Newark, Mr. DeRogatis was a long-time resident of Livingston. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served after World War II in occupied Japan. He had been a supervisor for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, where he had worked for 30 years before retiring in 1992. Surviving Mr. DeRogatis are his wife of 65 years, Ann (née Caprio); his children, John, Michael, James, and Anne Patricia; and one grandchild.

William B. Gilmore

William B. Gilmore, 86, of Livingston, passed away peacefully at home on February 28, 2017, of diabetes. Bill's viewing was on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Bradley, Brough, and Dangler Funeral Home in Summit. Private interment services were at Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, New York, which dates back to the pre-Civil War era of 1855 with the Gilmore family. Bill was born in Newark, raised in East Orange, and moved to Livingston more than 62 years ago. He was a millwright, cabinet maker, and carpenter who practiced his craft for more than 64 years, and continued to observe the rule of "measure twice and cut once" right up to his retirement in 2016. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a weapons certifi cation supervisor (Cpl.). Bill was based in Fairbanks, Alaska, before statehood, then known as the Territory of Alaska. He served terms as president and vice president of Essex County Carpenters Union No. 1209. He also served on the Livingston High School Vo-Tech Advisory Council.

Janet L. Cardell

Janet L. Cardell (neé Hulbert), passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017. She was the beloved wife for 56 years of William L. Cardell and devoted mother of Stephen, Wendy, and Bill. She was born in Orange, NJ and later moved to Livingston, where she and Bill raised their family. She spent her final years in West Caldwell. Mrs. Cardell was graduated from Berkeley Secretarial School. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a secretary to a trust offi cer of the Guaranty Trust Company in New York. She was an entrepreneur and artist. She won several awards in the field of fused glass artwork, and established a fused glass business which she ran for over 20 years. She was also on the jury of the First Mountain Crafters. She was a published freelance writer and the recipient of several writing awards. She volunteered in the Literacy Program in Orange and was a member of the Essex County Trail Walkers.

Hold Services Today For Joseph Chnapko

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, March 9, for Joseph Paul Chnapko, Sr., of Livingston at noon at the Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston. He was 95 years old. An Army veteran, Mr. Chnapko served in the 101st Airborne Division during the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Born in Newark, he was the founder and owner of Globe Motor Car Company in Fairfield, New Jersey for 50 years. Mr. Chnapko was predeceased by his wife, Yaffa Chnapko. Surviving are his children Linda Cummings and her husband, Matt; Kathleen Gentile and her husband, Arnold; Michelle Cox and her husband, Adam, Joseph Paul Chnapko, Jr. and his wife, Melissa, and David Goodfriend and his wife, Harley; and 12 grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.

Visitation is Held For William Leppla

William J. Leppla, 55, died on Saturday, March 4, at his residence in Livingston. Funeral arrangements were by Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston. Born in Morristown, Mr. Leppla lived his entire life in Livingston. He was a graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School, where he was a member of the hockey team, and later was graduated with a degree in physical education from Springfield College. He worked for many years as a foreman for Gray Supply Construction Company. Mr. Leppla was predeceased by his father, Robert. He is survived by his mother, Nadia, and his sister, Barbara.

Arlene Smith

Arlene Smith (née Goldman) of Somerset, New Jersey and Boynton Beach, Florida, passed away Monday, March 6, 2017 at Bethesda Hospital East in Boynton Beach with her husband of 60 years, Bud, by her side. Arlene was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 12, 1935 and attended Lincoln High School. She resided in Brooklyn until 1969, when she and Bud moved to Livingston, New Jersey. While in Livingston, Arlene became an avid tennis player (primarily at Spring Garden Country Club) and enjoyed her weekly canasta games. In 2004, they moved to Somerset and became “snowbirds,” spending time in both Somerset and Boynton Beach. Arlene was a homemaker until the mid-1970s, when she became a secretary for a society band (Milt Davidson) and shortly thereafter a travel agent. She took advantage of the perks of being a travel agent as often as she could. In addition to traveling, Arlene had a passion for dancing, and her happiest times were dancing at family events.

Services this Friday For Anthony Buglisi

Long-time Livingston resident Anthony Joseph Buglisi died Saturday, March 4, at the age of 91. Funeral services will be held at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston on Friday, March 10, at 10 a.m., with entombment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Mr. Buglisi had lived in Livingston since 1963, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Predeceased by his wife, Rose, he is survived by his children, Anthony P. and his wife, Donna, and April LaFerrara; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services Held For Dr. Kesselbrenner

Dr. Michael Kesselbrenner died at home in Livingston on Friday, February 24. He was 67 years old. Funeral arrangements were by Robert Schoem’s Menorah Chapel in Paramus. Born in New York City, Dr. Kesselbrenner attended Columbia College and Columbia Medical School, where he was also on the faculty. He was an interventional cardiologist in northern New Jersey where he had his own practice, and was associated with Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. Dr. Kesselbrenner is survived by four children including Joseph and his wife, Alison; David; Sarah; and Louis; and one grandson. He is also survived by life partner, Leslie Golub, and his brother Dan. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Israel and Ida Kesselbrenner, who were Holocaust survivors. The family suggests that donations be made to the Michael B. Kesselbrenner Memorial Scholarship Fund at Columbia Medical School.

Private Services For John McCarthy

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Saturday, January 7, for John F. McCarthy at Our Lady of the Scapular Catholic Church in Wyandotte, Michigan. Mr. McCarthy died on December 24, at the age of 68. A former Livingston resident, Mr. McCarthy moved to Michigan in 1977. He was employed by General Motors before retiring a number a years ago. Mr. McCarthy was a 1966 graduate of Livingston High School. In 1970, he was graduated from Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council at Mount St. Mary’s and a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Knights of Columbus Council in Livingston. Predeceased by his wife, Sharon (nee Kowalski), Mr. McCarthy is survived by two sons, Christopher and John (Marisa) of Michigan; two sisters, Elizabeth of Livingston and Elinor (George) Ribnicky of Marlborough, Connecticut; and a brother, Richard, also of Livingston.

Funeral Services For Audrey Chhabra

Audrey Claire (Krauss) Chhabra, 84, of Granby, CT., beloved wife of Brij M. Chhabra for 59 years, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017. Born and raised in North Arlington, NJ, daughter of the late Irving and Dorothy (Conley) Krauss, she and Brij raised their children first in Livingston, NJ and then the family moved to West Simsbury, CT. Brij and Audrey then moved to Burlington and finally settled in Granby ten years ago. Audrey was a postal clerk for the Simsbury Post Office for over 20 years before retirement and was the first female rural carrier on staff. She was an accomplished dancer and won a high school jitterbug contest. She enjoyed participating in the Simsbury Theatre Guild’s production of My Fair Lady in the 1970s. She loved to listen to music and her radio was always on. She was happy spending time in her garden, tending her flowers and she had a special affinity for birds – especially hummingbirds.
