Ryan Cardona Discusses the ‘Unreal’ Feeling of Being Drafted by the Reds

On Tuesday, July 13, the Cincinnati Reds drafted Livingston High School graduate Ryan Cardona in the 19th round of the MLB draft, pick number 570 overall. One week later, Cardona is already in Goodyear, Arizona for draft camp with his fellow new Reds signees. He isn’t sure when he will start playing in minor league games, but it could be soon.

Cardona, a Class of 2018 LHS graduate, said it was “unreal” to be drafted by a Major League Baseball team.

“I am thankful to have this opportunity and I have been blessed in so many ways throughout my life,” he said.

Livingston High School graduate Ryan Cardona was drafted this week by the Cincinnati Reds baseball team.

On Tuesday, July 13, the Reds selected Cardona in the 19th round of the MLB draft; pick number 570 overall.

“I’m so happy for Ryan. He’s a tremendous pitcher and a terrific young man,” said Mickey Ennis, who was Cardona’s Livingston Lancers varsity baseball coach. “He has worked extremely hard to get to this point. I’m excited to see where this journey takes him.”

LHS Grad Frank Schwindel Joins Oakland A’s Major League Roster

Frank Schwindel, a 29-year-old 2010 graduate of Livingston High School, was called up to the Oakland A’s Major League Baseball team on his birthday last Tuesday, June 29.

He had been playing for the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators when he was told to pack his bags for the big leagues. His wife and infant son flew from their New Jersey home to see him play this past week, according to reports.

In his first at bat with the team, on Wednesday, June 30, Schwindel hit a home run. As of press time, Schwindel has recorded three hits in 11 at bats, with an OPS (on base percentage plus slugging percentage) of .909, which is well above the league average.

CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON: The Livingston High School softball team, which won the state Group IV championship, completed the season with a 23-5 record, a #1 ranking in Group IV, and a final state ranking of #2. Senior captain Nathalia DiIanni was selected All-State, second team; and first team, All Group IV. All Group IV second team honors were awarded to senior outfielder Deja Robinson; sophomore infielder Caitlin Mullen; and freshman pitcher Sophia Mount. Jason Daily was selected Coach of the Year in the Super Essex Conference, and the Lancers were named Team of the Year.
