Wrestlers Win Two Conference Matches

The Livingston wrestling team had an exciting week, defeating rivals Irvington and Caldwell before dropping a non-conference match at Kearny.

Defeat Irvington

The trip to Irvington High School onWednesday night, January 9, ended with a 40-24 Lancer victory. Livingston jumped out to a 12-0 lead after Drew DiGangi and Michael Petrillo scored back to back pins at 120 and 126 pounds, respectively. The Blue Knights bounced back with four straight wins at 132, 138, 145 and 152 pounds before 160 pound freshman Max Lee got the boys in green back on track. He used an arm on the back to turn his opponent and pin him in the first period.

SOUTH MOUNTAIN BASKETBALL CLASSIC: The Livingston High School varsity, junior varsity, and freshman boys’ basketball teams played against Millburn in the South Mountain Reservation Basketball Classic. The “triple header” was held at Millburn High School on Saturday, January 5. The varsity Lancers won, 51-42, while the J.V. and the freshman teams lost, 41-30 and 53-49, respectively. Lancer freshman forward Brandon Kenney, #14, scores on a fast break against the Millburn defense.

Lancer Track Team Wins Medals, Break School Records at Essex Relays

The Livingston High School boys’ varsity track and field team was back on the track at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island on January 2 to compete against the fastest teams in Essex County. The Lancers came home with two medals and a new school record, and the Lancers, noted coach Nancy Petryna, “continued to show improvement in their speed, strength and endurance as they entered the championship portion of the season.”

Philmon Mehari Returns to Track As Super Essex Conference Champion

The Livingston High School boys’ indoor track and field team competed in the Super Essex Conference Championship on Saturday, December 22, held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.

The Lancers faced a strong field of competitors from the teams of the large schools in theAmerican Division. LHS cross country stand-out Philmon Mehari returned to the track after a brief hiatus following his successful fall season.

“Seniors and newcomers alike seized their opportunities to shine in the first big meet of the season that began a holiday week for many Livingston students,” said coach Nancy Petryna.
