Two “Gabbies” Clinch World Gymnastics Titles

Two Livingston girls named Gabby – Gabby Lederman, nine, and Gabby Gruber, ten – traveled to Orlando, Florida to represent Go For the Gold Gymnastics of Whippany in the USAIGC/IAIGC (United States Association of Independent Gymnastics Clubs/International Association of Independent Gymnastics Clubs) competition. The event was held at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress the weekend of June 23.

The gymnasts participated in four contests, floor exercise, balance beam, vault and uneven bars. Each event is scored out of ten and the scores on all four events are combined to determine the gymnasts’ all-around scores.

Livingston Pickleball

LIVINGSTON PICKLEBALL: A beautiful 72 degree Saturday morning in Livingston brought out more than 30 players – including Pascal Moore, Michael Goldstein, John DeStefano, and Ken Wissner, shown here – to the Northland pickleball courts. The group, Livingston Pickle ball, currently has nearly 300 players, and notes organizer Michael Garber, “is anxiously awaiting the opening of the new regulation pickleball courts at Heritage Middle School, scheduled to take place within the next two weeks.” Anyone interested in playing, with or without the group, may contact livepickleball@yahoo.com for information.

LHS Boys’ Lacrosse Team Ends Successful Season

The 2018 Livingston High School lacrosse season contained memorable moments and highlights with many individual and team successes, according to head coach Brad Dzama.

After dropping close games to start the season, the Lancers began a season-best seven game win streak. The first victory came against countyrival Montclair with a hard-fought 8-7 win. The Lancers then went on to steamroll their way through the Kimber Conference with dominating victories over Oratory Prep (12-5), Newark Academy (15-3), Verona (13-0), Cranford (12-8), and MKA (14-6).

Wildfire Champs

Lancer Baseball Team Wins Championship

The Livingston High School varsity baseball team concluded a “magical” season with a victory over Columbia, giving the Lancers their first conference championship since 1993 and a final record of 21-4.

After winning the county title, Livingston was eliminated by Randolph in the state tournament.

Baseball Team Wins GNT Championship

The Livingston High School varsity baseball team won the 2018 Greater Newark Tournament (GNT) Championship, defeating Nutley 8-3, in front of an estimated 1,000 spectators at Doc Goeltz Field in Verona on Sunday, May 20. This marked the seventh time that Livingston has won the title, with the last championship coming in 2009 when the Lancers defeated Nutley, 5-4.

Ryan Cardona threw a complete game, striking out six and walking one. He is now 8-0 for the season.

Sophomore Will Egner was the hitting star of the day. With the Lancers clinging to a 2-1 lead in the third inning, Egner came to bat with the bases loaded and two outs ,and launched the first pitch 365 feet over the left field fence for a grand slam homerun.

Volleyball Champions

VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS: The Livingston High School varsity boys’ volleyball team captured the 2018 Essex County Athletic Director’s Association Championship Trophy by defeating Bloomfield, 2-0, at West Essex High School on Saturday, May 19. Jacob Siwek led the Lancers with 12 kills, and Evan Cohen recorded 22 assists. Austin Hong had six kills in the victory, while Drew Nardone and Fil Tosic had four kills and one block apiece. Richard Kim had six service points.

LHS Athlete Receives Best Teammate Award

Livingston High School senior Edward Kasmin was honored with a “Best Teammate Award” from the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center on Thursday, May 17.

Kasmin played football all four years in high school, and track and field for the last three years. His events are discus and shot put.

“I felt very honored to be given an award in the name of Yogi Berra, to be recognized for qualities that he stood for,” Kasmin said. “When I was told I had been nominated, I was surprised. I didn’t think anything I was doing was that special. I just like to encourage my teammates to do their best all the time”

Bringing Home Medals

BRINGING HOME MEDALS: Eliot Vishnevsky of Livingston took first place in the standing long jump, and second place in the 50 meter run, at the Essex County Spring Games held on May 9 at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield. “Eliot worked hard this winter in our Special Olympics track and field class, which covered running, throwing and jumping,” commented Jennifer Quirk, the township’s adaptive recreation coordinator and director of its Shining Stars program.
