Dr. Emmanuel B. Montero, 84, of Livingston, died on Saturday, September 19, 2020.

Dr. Montero was born on May 31, 1936, in Misamis Occidental, Philippines. He was a resident of Livingston for 40 years before moving to Mendham, New Jersey.

He was an anesthesiologist at Bayonne Medical Center before retiring.

Husband of the late Pamela Montero, he is survived by his children, Melissa Montero, Theresa D'Aloia (Michael), Christopher Montero (Kristina), Amy Alfano (Phil); ten grandchildren; and five sisters. He was also predeceased by four brothers.

Visitation will be held at Paul Ippolito-Dancy Memorial, 9 Smull Avenue, Caldwell, on Friday, September 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be at St. Rose of Lima Church, East Hanover, on Saturday, September 26, at 11 a.m., followed by entombment at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, East Hanover.

Bernice F. Weill of Livingston, New Jersey passed away on Monday, September 14, of natural causes.

She was 96 years old, and had lived the last year of her life at Brandywine Living in the town of Livingston. She had previously resided in the same town since 1954.

Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1923, Bernice pursued a career as an educator and learning disabilities specialist. Respected as a specialist within the Livingston School District for over 30 years, she also published several articles and learning games in the field of learning disabilities.

Bernice was married to Dr. Carol E. Weill, a professor of Chemistry at Rutgers University, Newark. Their loving marriage lasted for almost 48 years, until his death in 1995.

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), volunteers were pleased to see two long time LPI friends and distribution partners after a five month pandemic absence.  “Livingston neighbors continue to keep food, baby items and other scarce necessities rolling to the homeless, profoundly poor and disenfranchised communities in Newark,” said LPI director Jeff Friedman. Luis Martinez, building coordinator at Willing Heart Community Care Center, happily received new baby items, while Monique Kelly, kitchen and clothing barn manager at Bessie Green Community, does her happy dance after accepting new and badly needed men’s clothing.

Theresa J. Del Tufo (née Melchionne), 91, passed away at home after a brief illness with family at her side on September 12, 2020 in Livingston, New Jersey.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Theresa was a graduate of Battin High School and attended Kean College. As a young woman, she worked for the Simmons Company in Elizabeth. Moving to Livingston in 1959, she spent much of her life there raising her family.

After her youngest son was in elementary school, she joined the staff at St. Philomena School (later Aquinas Academy) in Livingston and spent many years as the resource room teacher, helping students improve their reading skills.

FALL BASEBALL VICTORY: Livingston defeated Caldwell, 7-4, in the Fall Baseball League, eight year old age group division. The game, played on the George Gammond Field, was the first of nine in the fall season.

The end of summer has always been a bittersweet time for me, as it is, hands down, my favorite season. I love the long, lazy days. The warm, lovely nights. The feel of the sun on my face. The “coconutty” smell of sunscreen. Flip-flops my only footwear. It’s a time for hanging with family and friends, vacation trips, and dinners outdoors, at home or at restaurants.

This year, of course, has seen everything disrupted. But my husband, Ray, and I have been amazingly fortunate. We have stayed healthy, and employed: the two greatest concerns in this year of pandemic. So have most of our friends, and as the spring warmed into summer, we were able to go back to doing many of the things that we enjoy, so that the summer felt nearly normal.

As those of you who have checked your mailbox in recent weeks know, it’s that time of year when we are asked to contribute to an organization with members who work tirelessly to keep us safe: The Livingston First Aid Squad. It is important to realize that its active members are not paid. They are our neighbors and friends, who donate their time to be there for us during emergency medical situations, as well as provide many other supports and services to the community.

Livingston residents count on the LFAS in times of need but, unfortunately, when it comes to stepping up with monetary support, we have been falling short. Two years ago, less than 30 percent of the township donated. It is disappointing to think that so few of our residents support a service which could someday save their lives.

As of Wednesday morning, September 16, the Livingston Health Department has reported that a total of 534 Livingston residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the first case was recorded in mid-March. 72 of those residents have died as a result of the virus. Compared to the same time last week, there are three new cases, with no additional deaths.

New Jersey’s quarantine travel advisory has removed six states and added Puerto Rico since last week. There are now 30 states and territories on the list. California, Hawaii, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, and Ohio have been removed from the list. Individuals coming from the states and territories listed on the advisory should self-quarantine for 14 days. To be included on the travel ban, a state t a A F a r or territory must surpass ten average daily positive COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents. New Jersey’s ban runs concurrently with New York and Connecticut.
