Patricia M. Cox

Patricia Mary Cox, 84, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, January 2, 2020, in Livingston, New Jersey.

Patricia was predeceased by her beloved husband, John R. Cox. She is survived by her six children and 13 grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, 28 Livingston Avenue, Roseland, New Jersey. Arrangements are entrusted to Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston.

Boys’ Track Competes in Holiday Carnival; Mehari Brings Home Medal in 3200M

The Livingston High School boys’ track and field team ended the winter break with the Coach Glynn Holiday Carnival. The meet, held in Staten Island at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex,featuredeventsforfreshman, novice and varsity athletes in individual running and field events as well as relays. More than 50 teams from New Jersey travelled to the meet.

Many Lancers competed for the first time at this event, while seasoned teammates competed in novice and varsity divisions against tough competition, said coach Nancy Petryna.

Gerard M. Simons

Gerard (Jerry) Simons, 87, of Somerset, New Jersey, died peacefully at home Tuesday, December 24, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Jerry resided in Livingston for 38 years.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Straus); his children, Brian and Keith Simons; Kerri (Paul) McDonough; Stu Straus; and Lisa (David) Rose; his grandchildren, Dr. Christopher (Alicia) Simons, Kevin, Chad, and Rachel Simons, Drew McDonough,Alyson (Sean) Clayton, Jamie Straus, and Rylee and Alani Rose; his great-granddaughter, Hazel Jeanne Simons; and his brother, Joseph (Sandy) Simons. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Jeanne Simons.

Jerry served in the U.S. Navy and the Marines during the Occupation of Japan and the Korean Conflict, for which he received a Purple Heart.

He was a Detective for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the FBI Strike Force during his employment. He ended his career as safety vice president of Tully Construction, Queens, New York.

Lady Lancers Compete in SEC Championships

The Livingston High School girls’ winter track team competed in three meets over the winter break: the seasonopeneronDecember20;theSuper Essex Conference Championships on December 23; and the Coach Glynn Holiday Carnival on December 28.

“LHS competed in the tough American division of the SEC against 14 other county squads,” said coach Dave Czeizinger. He also noted that 45 teams compete in the Carnival. Both meets took place at the Ocean Breeze facility in Staten Island.

Community Rallies Against Anti-Semitism and Hate
Community Rallies Against Anti-Semitism and Hate

In solidarity with 25,000 people in New York City and countless others nationwide, hundreds of Livingston residents marched down South Livingston Avenue on Sunday, January 5, to rally against hate and anti-Semitism.

Signs that read “Peace” and “No Hate, No Fear,” were held by residents as they were escorted by Livingston Police officers down the roadway, from Mt. Pleasant Avenue to the Livingston Oval. The march was organized by residents Brandon and Claudia Minde and took place at the same time as thousands marched across the Brooklyn Bridge less than two dozen miles away. The solidarity march is in response to the recent rise in anti-Semitic crimes.

As is tradition in town, the Livingston Township Council held its annual organizational meeting on the morning of New Year’s Day. The meeting, held at the Senior/Community Center, appointed hundreds of volunteers to the township’s various committees and boards. The 2020 mayor and deputy mayor were also selected in front of hundreds of residents, elected officials, township employees, and committee volunteers in attendance.

Rudy Fernandez was unanimously voted by the Council as the next mayor, and Shawn Klein was unanimously selected as deputy mayor. This will be the third time Fernandez will serve as mayor of Livingston. The longest tenured councilman, it was his 12th organizational meeting.

Seth Cohen and Samantha Messer Installed:

Seth Cohen and Samantha Messer were sworn in at the Board of Education’s reorganization meeting on Tuesday, January 7. Messer was installed for a second term, and Cohen for his first term.

At the meeting, the district provided officially certified results of the November 5 election: Messer received 2,369 votes; Cohen 2,206; Sasha Pailet Koff, 1,854; and Alyse Berger Heilpern, 1,837.

Abigail Rose Gaston is Livingston’s First Baby

Abigail Rose Gaston, born Thursday, January 2, to Inna and Shawn Gaston of 25 Scarsdale Drive, is the winner of the West Essex Tribune’s 62nd annual First Baby Contest.

Abigail Rose was born at 7:03 p.m. on January 2 at Morristown Medical Center. She weighed eight pounds, seven ounces at birth, and is the Gastons’ third child. She joins two brothers, Ryan, age 3½, and Jasper, age 16 months.

Looking Forward to the Future

At the Township Council’s organizational meeting on New Year’s Day, Livingston’s residents, employees and elected officials gathered at the Senior/Community Center. Hundreds were appointed to dozens of township committees; Rudy Fernandez was sworn in as the year’s mayor; and Shawn Klein as deputy mayor. The two replaced Al Anthony, and Fernandez as 2019’s mayor and deputy mayor, respectively.

It was a genial two hour affair, with an air of familiarity and goodwill that started off 2020 on the right foot for those in attendance. As the Council members said in their speeches, Livingston appears to be set up well for the future. They detailed the accomplishments of 2019, while sharing the goals and plans for 2020.

Services Were Held For Donato Casiero

Donato Casiero, 93, of Whippany, formerly of Livingston and Orange, died on January 4 at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Predeceased by his wife, Giuseppina, Mr. Casiero is survived by his sons,Anthony, Vincent (Angela), and Daniel Casiero, Jr. (Angela); and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Casiero was born in Alberona, Italy and immigrated to the US in 1957. He was the founder and president of All State Landscaping, Inc. which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1998.

He served as a Eucharistic Minister for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Orange, where he co-founded the Maria Santissima dell’Incoronata Feast; a founding member of theAlberonese Social Club, which recognized him as the 1975 Alberonese Man of the Year; and a founding member and past president of the UnitedAssociation of Gardeners, a cooperative organization of landscapers in Essex and Morris counties.

The funeral was held Wednesday, January 8, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
