LHS Volleyball Team Advances in Tourney

The Livingston High School boys' volleyball team enters the third round of the North 2 section of the State Tournament with an impressive win over North 13th Street on Thursday afternoon. Livingston defeated North 13th Street by scores of 25-14, 25-13. This was the third time the Lancers have faced this strong team, which took them to the maximum three games in their two previous meetings.

Lancer Matt Scavetta Wins State Sectional Pole Vault Championship

Matt Scavetta continued his impressive senior season as he led the Lancer boys' varsity track and field team this past weekend at the NJSIAA North I Group IV State Sectional Championships. Scavetta had entered the pole vault competition at 11'6" with 14 of the 31 qualified pole vaulters still jumping.

Black Bear is Sighted in Town

A resident of 4 Downing Place had an uninvited visitor at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening: A 150 pound black bear was on the deck of his home. The resident called Livingston police, who tracked the "intruder" as it wandered from Downing Place to the wooded area along West Hobart Gap Road.

Offer Funeral Mass For Velia Castellano

A Mass for Velia "Vicky" R. Castellano was held on Tuesday, May 26, at St. Philomena's Church in Livingston. Mrs. Castellano, who resided in New Hope, Pennsylvania and was formerly of Livingston, died on Wednesday, May 20. She was born in Newark on August 18, 1931, to the late Joseph and Eva Russo. Mrs. Castellano was a 1949 graduate of Central High School, Newark, where she was second in her class and a cheerleader. She was employed as a secretary to the principal of Vailsburg High School in Newark. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Barron Castellano; a daughter, Elaine (Castellano) Grillo and her husband, Anthony Grillo; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Rose Ann Mirti. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mrs. Castellano may be made to the Salvation Army National Headquarters, P.O. Box 269, Alexandria, Virginia 22314.

Funeral Services Held For Gertrude Schafer

Gertrude L. Schafer, 81, died on Thursday, May 21, in Livingston, where she was a long-time resident. Predeceased by her husband, John, she leaves behind her sons, John, Thomas, Clifford, and Douglas, as well as four grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the Full Gospel Church of Livingston, on Wednesday, May 27.
