Services were held July 23 for Arnold Winick of Livingston, who died on July 20.

Mr. Winick was a graduate of Columbia High School in Maplewood and NewYork University, and recently retired as a CPA. He was a longtime member of Temple B’nai Abraham.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Sandy; his two sons, Michael (Sharon) and Steven (Ilysa); and five grandchildren.

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI), Livingston’s local non-profit organization, has a mission of “providing for the poor, homeless, and disenfranchised,” and LPI founder and director Jeff Friedman has urged contributors to take advantage of summer sales for the charity’s “Personal Shopping for the Homeless” initiative.
“This time of year, we are exposed to a barrage of sale ads on a daily basis,” said Friedman. “Summer close-out sales, back-to-school bargains, online special offers, two-for-one purchases, email specials, newspaper pull-out sections, and so much more. These wonderful sale opportunities exist right now both in stores and online. That’s why LPI is asking Livingston residents to join our ‘Personal Shopping for the Homeless’ efforts while sale opportunities are so rampant.”

Patricia M. Howard, 89, of Hellertown, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Fountain Hill.

Patricia was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 4, 1929, to the late Peter Michael and Julia Louis McCarty. Patricia retired from Newark, New Jersey, as a kindergarten teacher. She was a proud member of the Festival Choir of the Cathedral Basilica of Newark, New Jersey. She was a member of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Hellertown. Patricia was an avid reader, loved poetry, and enjoyed the arts.

Patricia is survived by her children, Peter Michael of Phillipsburg, New Jersey; Mary Therese (Paul Douglas) Harnett of Springfield Township; and a grandson, Eugene Thomas Harnett. She was predeceased by a son, Eugene Harry Howard and a granddaughter, Eilee Samantha Harnett.

Last weekend, Livingston experienced the strongest heat wave of the year, with temperatures in the 90s for several days and a heat index eclipsing the triple digit mark. In an effort to keep residents cool (in addition to having a cooling center at the Senior/Community Center), the township decided to open up both the Haines and Northland community pools to all residents.

We don’t recall the township ever opening the pools to all during a heat wave, and commend everyone involved for doing so at no charge to residents. It was a creative and simple way to help a sweltering population cool off. And that population took full advantage, with crowds more than tripling those who attended June’s open house event.

The West Essex Tribune would like to thank the Livingston Police Department’s officers for a job well done last week, apprehending a homicide suspect who was found in the township.

We won’t step on Police Chief Gary Marshuetz’s words, which can be read in this edition of the Tribune, but we wanted to commend the LPD all the same.

Our officers took what could have potentially been a very dangerous situation for the township and its residents and handled it without incident. Most residents likely awoke that Monday morning with no knowledge of what had occurred right in their neighborhood. We are lucky to be able to sleep so soundly here in Livingston.

In this edition of the Tribune, you will read about a residential fire that originated in the HVAC system of a Vanderbilt Drive house. Nobody was home at the time of the fire and an alert was transmitted to the Livingston Fire Department, who arrived in time to extinguish the blaze before it spread and left the home uninhabitable.

Others, particularly those without a properly functioning fire alarm system, may not have been so lucky in a similar situation. It is why this incident is a good opportunity to remind residents of the importance of maintaining a functional fire alarm system. Also, if your alarm system has the ability to connect to a central fire station, one should ensure that it is done. That feature just stopped what ended up being a minor, contained, fire rather than one that could have potentially destroyed a home before a passerby noticed and help arrived.

Dr. Joseph R. DiMartino,formerly of Livingston, died on Tuesday, July 16, after a brief illness.

Born in 1955, Dr. DiMartino graduated from Livingston High School, Fordham University and the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. He maintained a practice in New York City before retiring to Phoenix, Arizona.

He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Annette; his sister, Nancy; his brother, Bob; and other family members.

A memorial visitation was held on July 24 at the LaMonica Memorial Home in Livingston. Interment was private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to a favorite charity in Dr. DiMartino’s name.

Michael A. Conte, Jr. of Livingston died Monday, July 15, in the township. He was 72 years old.

Graveside services will be held today,Thursday, July 25 at 11 a.m. at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. Arrangements are under the direction of the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston.

Born in Newark, Mr. Conte was a long-time resident of Livingston. He worked for many years for Laborers’ Union, Local 342 before his retirement.

He was predeceased by his sister, Marianne Reichler.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Arlene Conte; and by one grandchild.

Pasquale “Pat” J. DeIeso, age 87, of Livingston, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 21, 2019.

AMass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Philomena Church, 386 South Livingston Avenue, Livingston, on Saturday July 27, 2019 at 11 a.m. Entombmentwillfollow atGateofHeaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

The family will receive their friends at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston, on Friday, July 26, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Pat was employed by Anselmi & DeCicco Inc. of Maplewood for over 40 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Livingston UNICO and AARP. An active member of St. Philomena Church, he served as an usher for 40 years.

Rochelle Doliner (Paris) of Verona, formerly of Livingston, died on July 21. She was 88 years old.

Mrs. Doliner grew up in Newark and graduated from West Side High School in 1949.

After living in Livingston for more than 40 years, she moved toVerona with her companion, Jack Silverman.

Mrs. Doliner had a 40 year career at Gail Lowenstein/Caldwell Banker Realtors in Livingston.

Predeceased by her husband, Seymour, Mrs. Doliner is survived by her daughters, Randi Epstein (Allan) of Succasunna, Jodi Weiss (Brad) of Flanders, and Lori Seelig of Ocean; her sisters, Blanche Blum (Stanley) and Edith Davidson; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
