Joseph Dalesandro, 93, a former resident of Livingston, died in Livingston on Thursday, November 22. He was living in West Orange at the time of his death. Mr. Dalesandro is survived by his wife, Alice Wonsor-Dalesandro. Arrangements were under the direction of Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston.

There will be a Memorial Gathering for Dr. Robert Kish, who served as superintendent of the Livingston Public Schools from 1985 to 1996, on Saturday, December 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. Memories will be shared at 2 p.m. The event will be held at Revivals, 4 South Ridge Road, Perkasie, Pennsylvania, and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Last Friday was a great day for the DeFilippo family. 16-year-old Gabby was set to make her debut in “Midsummer/Jersey” at Livingston High School, and prior to that the family returned to a newly-renovated home after spending several weeks away.

The DeFilippos were gone for three weeks while crew from “George to the Rescue,” an NBC show hosted by home improvement specialist George Oliphant, worked to remodel their Midway Drive home.

A snowstorm that turned to sleet after dropping seven inches on Livingston succeeded in paralyzing the town – and much of the state, particularly the northern portion of it – on Thursday afternoon and evening, November 15. Heavy, fast-falling snow and slick conditions exacerbated by inability to get plows through created a traffic nightmare. Commuters trying to get home reported spending up to eight hours or more in their cars, as portions of major highways were closed at various times during the evening, including Route 280, Route 80, and Route 10. Schools were not dismissed early, and school buses entered the traffic stream just as most area businesses were sending their employees home, making for heavierthan- usual volume on the roads when conditions were worsening. Many of those buses were unable to negotiate the roadways.

Prior to the scheduled business of the Township Council’s regular meeting, the Council took a moment to thank Livingston’s police, fire, and emergency medical services, along with the library staff, for coming to the aid of residents in need during last Thursday’s snow storm, which left many trapped in cars and township buildings, unable to make it even short distances home.

“Last Thursday was hopefully a once-in-a-lifetime, or at least a once-in-a-season storm,” mayor Ed Meinhardt said. “Fortunately all of our residents made it home with their houses standing and the lights on.”

Lancer cross country star Philmon Mehari completed a stellar cross country season with a berth in the Meet of Champions.

The Meet of Champions was first held November 22, 1972. The 2018 race, marking the event’s 47th anniversary, was held Saturday, November 17, at Holmdel.

A woman reported that she was hit in the head with a shovel during a dispute in the parking lot of the Livingston Mall on Sunday, November 18, at 5:15 p.m. Tiffany Simmons, age 23, of Orange told police that she was walking out of the mall when she was almost struck by a black SUV. A man driving the SUV exchanged expletives with Simmons. Simmons said she continued on her way and sat in her mother’s car.

The male then allegedly began to encourage his female companion to beat up Simmons. The unknown female began banging on the window of the car Simmons was sitting in. Simmons stated she saw her mother walking out of the mall toward the car, and “got out to protect her mother as she approached.”

Board president Pamela Chirls and member Ronnie Konner opened the November 19 Board of Education meeting by thanking the community for returning them to office. At the end of the meeting, a community member criticized another Board member for her actions following the resignation of superintendent Chris Steffner.

A security guard was present at the meeting.

Chirls and Konner spoke appreciatively of the Tribune, other media and in person and online forums for promoting the election and allowing the candidates to present their ideas.

Edward Oshins of Coconut Creek, Florida, passed away in Verona on Friday, November 16, 2018. He was 81 years old. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he graduated from Boys High School and received his bachelor’s degree at Brooklyn College. He remained in Brooklyn, marrying and raising his family there, until relocating to Coconut Creek in 2000. As a U.S. Army veteran in the late 1950s, Edward was redeployed in 1962 during the Berlin wall crisis. He was owner of Blue Jay Management in Brooklyn, a firm in the real estate industry. Edward is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Bell) Oshins; sons, Jason and his wife, Alice; David and his wife, Julie; and grandchildren, Jake, Rachel, Julie, Ari and Elizabeth. He is also survived by his sister, Rosalie Lieberman; sister-in-law, Phyllis Jonas, and nieces and nephews, Seth, Elissa and Barry. Services were at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston followed by a burial in Beth David Cemetery in Elmont New York.
