Veterans Ask to Limit Events at Memorial

At the start of the Tuesday, May 22, Township Council conference meeting, about a dozen Livingston veterans addressed the Council members, asking them to refrain from hosting events at Memorial Park at the Oval, other than ones that honor veterans who did not return home from war.

“As veterans’ organizations, we consider that sacred, and we would like to keep it that way,” said Tony Ciccone, Commander of VFW Post #2856 in Livingston. “We look at it as a cemetery. When you walk into a cemetery, you want to show respect.”

Power Supplier Not Selected

A decision to select the power supplier for Livingston through energy aggregation, a move that Township Council members hoped to make to save residents money and use more renewable energy, will have to wait at least a few more months. After reviewing proposals from both Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), which would offer the township no additional savings, and Public Service Enterprise Group (PSE&G), which offered little savings, the Council decided to accept neither of them at Tuesday’s regular meeting.

The Council had resolutions prepared to award contracts to either JCP&L or PSE&G depending on what the proposals had said. There was a third resolution prepared to reject both of them and put out another bid in a few months in the hopes of receiving a more favorable proposal. That final resolution was the one that passed Tuesday evening.

Road Work

On Monday, the intersection of West Northfield Road and Hillside Avenue was closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. for milling and paving. The work was certainly essential – we need to maintain our roadways, specifically at major intersections – but it caused a traffic nightmare for many during the morning commute. Sure, road work is typically an inconvenience whenever it occurs, but why start at 7 a.m. on a Monday?
