Mascots danced down the aisle and elementary school Student Council officers talked about their activities to build community, as principals, advisors, teachers and parents cheered them on.

So began the November 18 Board of Education meeting.

“I have been impressed with the true purpose with which our elementary schools build connections to our schools, build identity and build community, said superintendent Matthew Block.

“While I know we will have fun tonight… the work of creating communities in each of our schools is very serious work,” he said.

At this past Monday’s Livingston Township Council meeting, the West Essex Tribune received a proclamation, lauding the publication for its 90 years serving Livingston residents.

President and publisher Jennifer Cone Chciuk, along with three of the Tribune’s four living editors, were there to accept the honor (the fourth only did not attend because she was working at the Livingston Board of Education meeting, just down the road).

The proclamation read, in part: “The mayor and members of the Livingston Township Council take great pride and pleasure in honoring the West Essex Tribune on its 90th anniversary, and the Township of Livingston is proud to consider the West Essex Tribune its hometown paper.”

Town Council Introduces New Zoning Amendment For Marijuana Business

At last week’s Planning Board meeting, Board members discussed amending language to general zoning requirements in town to prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries, marijuana retail, and wholesale stores in all zoning districts. The ordinance was first proposed by the Township Council in October before it was sent to the Planning Board, so they could respond with recommendations. At last week’s meeting, the Planning Board decided not to ban marijuana business in the Master Plan, but rather to encourage the Council to research and listen to the community, so any regulations decided upon would be done strictly by the Township Council.

So, at the next Council meeting, on Monday, October 18, the Council withdrew the original ordinance and submitted a new one on first hearing.

Planning Bd. Keeps Marijuana Ban Out of Master Plan

The Livingston Planning Board, in discussing a proposed amendment to the Master Plan to include the prohibition of marijuana-based businesses last Thursday evening, November 14, voted to keep such a ban out of the Master Plan. The Board instead made an addendum that instructs the Township Council to be aware of issues associated with the cannabis industry.

The following addendum to the Master Plan was formally adopted:

“The Township Council should be aware of the emerging land use issues involving the cannabis industry, solicit the input of the community, and consider and adopt such prohibitions or regulations of cannabis land uses as the Township Council may determine to be in the best interests of the health, safety and welfare of the community.”
