When the Livingston Town Council honored Sally Cohen on Monday for her long-time stewardship of the Livingston Advisory Committee for Disabilities (LACD), a large contingent of friends and supporters were there to congratulate her.

One of her staunchest supporters is Bob Gebroe, himself a long-time leader of LACD.

“On behalf of the hundreds – maybe thousands – you have helped over the years, we thank you,” he said.

After an emotional few weeks of hard training and competition, senior Philmon Mehari qualified to run at in the Group 4 State Championships held on November 16 at Holmdel Park. He medaled and earned a berth in the Meet of Champions this weekend.

The State Championship course has a tough uphill to start the race, and the competition at this event is fierce.

At this year’s event, 150 competitors were fighting to gain position into the woods after a long incline. Many of the state’s top ranked teams and individual qualifiers were competing in Group 4.

Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI) volunteers travel to a variety of locations during the process of delivering to the charity’s growing group of distribution partners, explained founder and director Jeff “The Coat Guy” Friedman. “The plight of homelessness and extreme poverty never changes, except to grow in numbers,” he noted. “Making their rounds downtown with normal deliveries, LPI’s volunteers become aware of isolated in-need situations and find ways in which to help.”
As an example, about three weeks ago, volunteers noticed a small, homeless enclave beside the entrance to a major highway, actually part of an on-ramp. “As seen in one of today’s photos, five homeless folks are encamped just on the other side of a guardrail,” said Friedman. “Aside from the daily, steady and relentless noise and exhaust fumes, what about safety issues in terms of cars and trucks passing closely?”

The Board of Education commemorated Veterans Day at its November 11 meeting when three faculty members from Livingston High School who served in the military led the Pledge of Allegiance.

They wereAmro Mohammed, dean of students, a veteran of 26 years in the Marines; Marie Battist-Rock, business teacher, who spent 2 ½ years in the Army and four in the Reserves; and Mike Munley, who teaches health and physical education and spent four years in the Marines.

“People have given so much for our freedom,” commented school superintendent Matthew Block. “We are honored that our staff members who have given so much of themselves are able to join us tonight. We thank them for their service.”

Frank “Pep” Saul, aged 95, died peacefully at home on Thursday, November 7, 2019. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 15, 2019 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston, New Jersey. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral Mass on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at 1:30 p.m. at Saint Philomena Church, 386 South Livingston Avenue, Livingston, New Jersey.

Born in Oradell, New Jersey, Pep was a Seton Hall University Hall of Famer and New Jersey Sports Hall of Famer. Pep spent six years in the NBA and was a member of four World Championship NBA teams, Rochester (1950-1951), and Minneapolis (1951-1954).

He lived in Livingston for 55 years before moving to East Hanover.

Ruby Polonetsky Schrimmer died peacefully in her sleep on November 9, 2019, at the age of 83.

Born in the Bronx on December 9, 1935, she lived for over 45 years in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, and then retired to Livingston.

AHunter College graduate majoring in psychology and education, Ruby received her master’s degree in special education from Southern Connecticut State College. She greatly enjoyed over 30 years as a third grade teacher in Old Saybrook, with concurrent roles as the district’s math supervisor, president of her teacher’s union, and recipient of Teacher of the Year.

Following her “retirement,” Ruby taught English to immigrants and relished her role as a Hebrew School teacher.

Tonight, Thursday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Livingston Planning Board meeting, an open public forum will be held to discuss amendments to general zoning requirements prohibiting medical marijuana dispensaries, retail, and wholesale stores in all zoning districts.

We discussed Veterans Day in this space last week, but we feel compelled to briefly bring it up here once more.

On the annual holiday this past Monday, some of Livingston’s veterans, including members of the local VFW, gathered at Memorial Park to pay their respects. It was an informal affair; our veterans did not make a big deal out of this gathering.

Election Day has come and gone. The races are over. Thanksgiving is almost here, and Christmas trees are already being purchased. It’s time to move on, but it is hard to do so with campaign signs still littering our streets.

As of publication day, today, Thursday, November 14, it has been nine days since the elections took place. Yet we still see signs scattered along major roads and at intersections. We debated highlighting some locations of signs that continue to line the streets, but our goal is not to call out candidates whose names adorn the offending signs. We simply want the signs taken out of the ground.
