During his comments at the Town Council’s reorganization meeting, councilman Rudy Fernandez urged residents to attend Livingston’s 2015 Citizens’ Institute. This program, which was spearheaded by former mayor Arlene Johnson and township manager Michele Meade, is designed to provide perspective and information on local issues. It is an important first step for residents who want to learn how to participate in building our community.

Athletic Director Plans to Retire

After 14 years as athletic director in Livingston, and 42 years in education overall, Patrick Genova has announced his retirement at the end of this school year. “Now is the time to take a deep breath and not worry if it rains or not,” said Genova, who has successfully managed 30 varsity sports at 75 levels in a comprehensive athletic program at Livingston High School.

Funeral Services For Delores Messina

Delores Geraldine Messina (nee Schiafo) died on January 1 at CareOne of Morris in Parsippany. She was 86 years old. Born in Newark, Mrs. Messina lived in Livingston for 15 years before residing in West Orange, Montville and Parsippany. She was a front end manager and hostess for more than 30 years, at the Beef & Bottle in Livingston and then at B.G. Fields in Mountainside, retiring seven years ago. Predeceased by her husband, Edward, Mrs. Messina is survived by her daughters, Barbara, Doreen and Mariannne; her brother, Emil Schiafo; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the LaMonica Memorial Home , followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Raphael's Church, both in Livingston, on January 5. She is interred in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of New Jersey, 400 Broadacres Drive, Bloomfi eld, NJ 07003.

The Livingston Lancer varsity ice hockey team lost to the St. Rose High School Purple Roses, 2-0, on Friday, December 26, and then lost to the Madison High School Dodgers, 2-1, on Saturday, December 27, at Codey Arena in West Orange in the Essex County Holiday Tournament.
