At the Monday, August 26, regular meeting of the Township Council, the Council heard two presentations, passed several resolutions, and introduced a plan to acquire property for a new Department of Public Works Building.

DPW Building

A proposed ordinance was introduced that would authorize the commencement of an action under eminent domain to acquire block 102, lot 12 in Livingston. The 8.392 acre parcel of land is currently owned by the Zheng Yaun International Flagship School, LLC. It is located on Industrial Parkway, and is currently an overgrown field.

The purpose of acquiring the property for public use, according to the ordinance, would be to build a new Department of Public Works facility. There have been discussions on whether to renovate or move the existing South Livingston Avenue facility for several years.

Hazel Knows Coat Season is Coming

Article Image Alt Text

The always fashionable Livingston Philanthropies Inc. (LPI) volunteer Hazel lives with LPI founder and director Jeff (the “coat Guy”) Friedman and his wife, Karen. Here, says the Coat Guy, Hazel channels her inner Dalmatian to remind everyone that jacket, coat and winter accessories season is just around the corner. “LPI endorses Hazel’s announcement and advises that it’s not too early to donate these badly-needed items,” said Friedman. “Please drop your warm coats, jackets, gloves, scarves and winter hats at the offices of the West Essex Tribune, located at 495 South Livingston Avenue, next to ShopRite. Just to remind our ever-philanthropic Livingston neighbors, we are also requesting hotel sized toiletries, new cosmetics, diapers, women’s products, new men’s socks, shoes, family clothing and more. LPI is a non-profit corporation, and provides receipts, upon request, for 2019 tax purposes.

Going Away to College

As summer starts to wind down, hundreds of residents are about to embark on an exciting, and somewhat scary journey: starting college. Some of Livingston’s youth have already left for their new schools, while others will depart from town in the coming weeks. It’s a momentous step, but our young residents are well prepared to head to college, and to succeed, thanks in no small part to their upbringing in this town and its stellar school and support systems.

And don’t forget, students and parents, to stop by Town Hall before heading off to college to register for absentee ballots for November’s elections. For many students, it will be the first time they will be able to cast a vote, and we wouldn’t want any residents missing that opportunity.
