Neil Larney

Neil M. Larney, 80, of Livingston passed away Sunday, July 22, 2018. Born in Newark to Cornelius and Elizabeth Larney, Neil was the beloved husband of the late Barbara Larney; loving father of the late Timothy Larney and his wife Susan, Michael Larney, Eileen Larney, and Mary Press and her husband Robert; cherished grandfather of Andrew and Brian Larney, and Daniel and Matthew Press; dear brother of Gail Judge, Terence Larney and his wife Margaret, and Thomas Larney and his wife Lydia. Neil is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and close friends. Visitation will be held today, Thursday, July 26, from 4 - 8 p.m. at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston. The funeral Mass will be Friday, July 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church, 386 S. Livingston Avenue, Livingston. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Dr. Melvin Goldblat

Dr. Melvin Goldblat, age 76 of Fairfield, Connecticut and formerly of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 20, 2018 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut. Dr. Goldblat was born in Newark, New Jersey, a son of the late Joseph and Jeanette Goldblat. Dr. Goldblat received his bachelor of science degree from the Massacusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in 1964, his M.D. (cum laude) from Yale University School of Medicine in 1967, and completed his internship, residency and fellowship through Mount Sinai Hospital in New York (1967 to 1972). He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander during his service from 1972 to 1974. Dr.

John Kopinsky Jr.

John Kopinsky, Jr., 78, of Livingston, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 21, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. John was employed by Verizon for 40 years, holding various positions and became manager in the Madison office. Upon retirement in 2001, he became a crossing guard for the Livingston Police. John enjoyed knitting and crocheting; he made many afghans for all his family. He enjoyed watching football, baseball and hockey. He loved the beach and being with his grandchildren. He was the beloved husband of Linda for 57 years; the loving father of Lisa and her husband, Jim Ott; Alan; Glen and his wife, Lori Kopinsky; Dana and her husband, Joseph Alecci; and Dawn and her husband, Rich Vilacoba; and the grandfather of Alyssa, Molly, John, Matthew, Rachel, Eric, Hope, Jessica, and Claire. Visitation took place yesterday, Wednesday, July 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 East Mt.

Ernest T. Werbel, Sr.

Ernest Theodore Werbel, Sr., 70, of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away Monday, July 23, 2018. Predeceased by his father, Herman Werbel, Ernest is survived by his devoted wife, Frimet; his loving son, Ernest Jr.; his beloved mother, Eleanor; and his dear sister, Toni Ellen. A graveside service was held at King Solomon Cemetery, Clifton, New Jersey, on Wednesday, July 25. Funeral Arrangements were under the direction of Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston, New Jersey.

Edward A. McInroy

Edward A. McInroy, 93, of Livingston, New Jersey, passed away Friday, July 20, 2018. He was born in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, to Edward and Elizabeth McInroy. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II. Ed was a graduate of East Stroudsburg State University and later earned his M.S.Ed. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Ed was a lifelong educator, and began teaching in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and Rutherford, New Jersey. He then spent 32 years working for the Livingston Board of Education, first as a teacher and coach, and, later, as the athletic director and a coach for the district. Ed started the high school soccer program (girls’ and boys’), the golf team, and the driver’s education program. Among his many successful seasons as a coach, “Coach Mac” led the 1972 boys’ soccer team to Livingston High School’s first overall New Jersey State Championship and first undefeated season (20-0-0).

Officers Sworn In at Council Meeting

At the start of the Monday, July 16 Township Council regular meeting, officers Andrew Danielsen and Jarrett Hesselbirg were sworn in as the newest officers of the Livingston Police Department.

“It’s always a special day when we swear in new officers,” Acting Chief Gary Marshuetz said, adding that the officers will most likely serve 30 years in the department, making the police department and township a part of their families.

LITTLE LEAGUERS WIN TITLE: The Livingston Little League 9-10U team captured the District 8 title, defeating a tough Nutley American team by a score of 6-4 on Wednesday, July 11. The boys went 4-0 in their bracket to get to the finals, defeating Ironbound, Nutley East, Caldwell and Northward soundly.

“McGruff the Crime Dog” to Pose For Photographs at National Night Out

Livingston, along with thousands of other communities across the country, will celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, August 7. The event will begin with an opening ceremony at the gazebo in Memorial Park at 5:30 p.m.

“This is an annual communitybuilding campaign that promotes police-community partnerships to make our neighborhoods a safer, better place to live,” said Officer Joy Klapal of the Livingston Police Department’s Community Policing Unit. “National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. It also provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.”

LHS Alumnus Bicycles Cross Country To Get “Pumped Up” for New Venture

Former Livingston resident Leslie (Sher) Gold and her husband, Jeffrey, completed a 60-day cross-country bicycling trip that began on Saturday, March 24, in Long Beach, California, and ended in Livingston on Tuesday, May 22.

As per cycling tradition, the couple dipped the rear wheels of their bicycles in the Pacific Ocean at the start, and the front wheels in the Atlantic Ocean, at Asbury Park, at the end.

Up In Smoke

At Monday’s Township Council meeting, an ordinance was passed to Livingston’s general zoning requirements that will make it difficult for retail businesses with the primary focus of e-cigarettes (or “vaping”) to open in town. The ordinance was first proposed last month and passed this week by a three to one vote of the Council. Councilman Shawn Klein was absent at Monday’s meeting, while Councilman Michael Silverman was the lone member in opposition to the ordinance.
