School District Recognizes Heritage Student

SCHOOL DISTRICT RECOGNIZES HERITAGE STUDENT: Ethan Haber, 13, shown on the right, was honored Monday night at the Livingston Board of Education meeting for assisting a friend who had a medical emergency on the playground at Harrison School on Sunday, March 4. Presenting Ethan with a certificate, superintendent Chris Steffner said they were able to see what happened, afterward, on the school camera.

HMS Volleyball Team Wins Finals

HMS VOLLEYBALL TEAM WINS FINALS: The Heritage Middle School/YMCA girls’ volleyball team won the GMCJSCA Tournament finals versus Mendham Township Middle School on March 15. Coaches Stephanie Fox and Kathryn Picardo, teachers at Livingston High School, led the girls through an undefeated season.

Youth Devils Win Hockey Tournament

YOUTH DEVILS WIN HOCKEY TOURNAMENT: The New Jersey Youth Devils Squirt Minor hockey team recently won the 2018 Atlantic City Squirt Shamrock Shootout Tournament, held at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees. After playing four competitive games over the course of two days, including an overtime shoot-out victory, the Youth Devils became Division Champions.

Student Walkout

On Wednesday, March 14, about 1,000 students exited Livingston High School for 17 minutes, a response to those killed last month at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The students held signs, chanted, sang songs and read poems. They listed the names of each person who was killed in Parkland. They took a stance and let their voices be heard.

School Calendar

At Monday night’s meeting, the Livingston Board of Education discussed potential changes to the 2017-18 school calendar that would prevent students from having to attend class next Monday, during what was scheduled as spring break. Changes would have added an additional day to the end of the calendar for students Pre-K through 11, while adding a Saturday at the end of April for seniors, all to keep spring break intact and provide the state-mandated 180 days of school.

Council Introduces Municipal Budget; Selects Energy Aggregator at Meeting

At the Livingston Township Council Meeting on Monday, March 19, the 2018 municipal budget was introduced and an energy aggregator was chosen after months of deliberation.

At the conference meeting prior to the council meeting, Council members discussed the possibility of Livingston being eligible for disaster relief funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency following the March 7 winter storm, which dropped 15 to 18 inches of snow on the township. Township manager Barry Lewis said he will learn in the coming weeks if Livingston suffered enough damage to be deemed a disaster.

There Will Be School on Monday, March 26; Snow Days Exceeded District Allotment

The Livingston Board of Education, after comments from a dozen audience members, decided not to change how snow days will be recouped. Schools will be open on Monday, March 26, as indicated on the official school calendar, cutting into the spring break.

Three inclement weather days had been provided in the official 2017-18 academic calendar. Additional days, if needed, were to be taken from the spring break in the following order: Monday, March 26, Tuesday, March 27, and Wednesday, March 28.

Residents Must Dispose of Trees

As employees of Livingston’s Department of Public Works continue to clean up debris from Winter Storm Quinn, the township reminds property owners they are responsible for trees or limbs that have fallen on their properties.

Township trees are located within the ten-foot right of way, the area beginning at the curb line and extending ten feet back toward the home. DPW will dispose of the trees and brush that have fallen in that area and into the street during the storm.

Service Will Be Held For Carmella Colicchio

Carmela “Cam” J. Colicchio, 85, of Livingston, died on Saturday, March 17 in West Caldwell. Born in Orange to the late Samuel and Maria Cecca, Mrs. Colicchio resided in Livingston for the past 55 years. She is survived by her husband, Eugene; her children, Eugene Samuel (Susan), Cristopher (Jacalyn), and Cary (Carmen). She is also survived by her four grandchildren and her sister, Antoinette DeChino. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston. A funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, March 23, at 10 a.m. at St. Philomena Church. Cremation will be private.
