Former longtime Livingston police officer Richard Flinn died December 10 at the age of 59.

Police Chief Gary Marshuetz, who worked with Officer Flinn for the first half of his career, recalled, “Duty, honor, respect, integrity are just but some of the many distinguishable attributes Rich possessed and lived by in both his personal and professional career.

“He embodied what it meant to have community pride and spirit. His career was filled with many acknowledgments for having coordinated or participated in community functions which fostered and manifested the very idea of community.”

At the final Livingston Township Council meeting of the year on Monday, December 16, the Council passed resolutions for 2020, and reflected on the year that was.

“It’s been a pleasure to be the mayor,” said Al Anthony, who will end his second term as mayor and continue as a Council member at the end of the month.

As such, he issued a proclamation to his wife, declaring it Lori Anthony Day. He pledged to return to assuming “his fair share of the household responsibilities” now that his mayoral term is ending.

Livingston ophthalmologist Michael Harris of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, formerly of Livingston and Green Brook, died December

1. He was 75 years old. A memorial service will be held at a later date in New Jersey.

Dr. Harris was a graduate of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, then attended the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NewYork. He did a year of general medicine at Jackson Memorial, in Miami, Florida.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a medical officer.After a residency at Albert Einstein Hospital in New York, he opened his own practice in Livingston, serving the community for 43 years.

Andrea Scala-Fenske, 78, formerly of Livingston, died on Tuesday, December 10. She was born in Jersey City and lived in Livingston for many years before moving to East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvnia, about 20 years ago.

Mrs. Scala-Fenske was an administrative assistant at Saint Barnabas Medical Center for 20 years, retiring in 2000.

She is survived by her husband, Richard H. Fenske; her children, Scott Fenske, Deborah and William Rodgers, Sean and Nicole Fenske, and Dawn and Robert Cloud; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She is also survived by her siblings, Gail Hain, Rosalie Scala, and Anthony P. Scala.Arrangements were handled by Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home.

REMEMBERING PEARL HARBOR: Livingston veterans gathered on Saturday, December 7, at Memorial Park to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which drew the United States into World War II. They were joined in remembering the “day that will live in infamy” by members of the Township Council, police, firefighters, and First Aid Squad members, as well as veteran supporter Bunny Ratner. Brian Boyle, Junior Vice Commander of the Livingston VFW, introduced veterans who read first-hand accounts of December 7, 1941. Shown here, veterans in attendance included Boyle, a National Guard member and World War II veteran (whose names were not available), Bill Brost, Fred Picini, Jerry Schiazzano, Dr. Frank De Gregorio, Dr. Fred Friedman, Thomas Bucca, Walter Wilczak, Lou Greenspan, George Walsh, Charlie Quinn, Skip Van de Vaarst, Jerry Wolfe and Michael Sikora.

Anthony Hope passed away on December 6, 2019, at the age of 92. He was the son of Daniel and Mary Hope.

Tony was born and raised in the Roseville section of Newark, New Jersey. He attended Abington Avenue School and graduated from Central High School in 1945.

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to the Counter Intelligence Corps in Linz,Austria. There, he helped displaced persons return to their home countries after World War II ended.

Upon returning to the United States, he married the love of his life, Marie (nee Colasanti) in June of 1952.

He attended Seton Hall University on the G.I. Bill and earned his B.S. and master’s degrees in education. He taught physical education, health, social studies, and driver’s education at Livingston High School. “Coach Hope” then became the athletic director there until his retirement in 1993.

Former Livingston resident Emilio Menarguez died Monday, December 9, in Morristown. He was 81 years old.

Visitation will be held onThursday, December 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston. The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 13, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

Born in Newark, Mr. Menarguez resided in Livingston for 26 years, before moving to Morris Township 23 years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; his children, Greg and his wife, Barbara, of Basking Ridge, and Dona Zappulla and her husband, Joe, of Easton, Connecticut; his brother, Jules Menarguez of Little Egg Harbor Township; and seven grandchildren.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and as we continue through this holiday season, we wanted to reflect on some matters that are regularly brought up around this time.

We are always thrilled to see our already magnanimous community give even more come the holiday season, but as we approach the New Year, let us not lose that generous spirit.

In the cold winter months ahead, do not forget that your donations will continue to be needed, as contributions to charitable groups and organizations tend to fall off dramatically after the holidays end. So if you are able, try to give a little more in the coming months.
