Livingston community

On Monday, September 16, the Tribune was one of many community groups with a booth at the Senior/Community Center for the annual Welcome to Livingston event, where new residents and families were invited to meet, mingle, and learn a little bit about what makes this town so special.

Booths were set up to let people know of all the services and organizations in town (that’s where the Tribune comes in!). Mayor Al Anthony and members of the Township Council, Chief Gary Marshuetz and members of the Livingston Police Department, representatives from Livingston’s school district, and many more were in attendance to provide newcomers with helpful information as they acclimate to their new home.

Liliane M. Antaki (née Abboud), 81, of Livingston, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2019.

Born in Heliopolis, Egypt, she had fond memories of swimming in the Suez Canal as a young girl. She lived in Cairo, married, then moved to Beirut with her family where she lived for many years before the family immigrated and settled in Livingston in 1982.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Antaki was the office manager for Colonial Export in Whippany. A longtime parishioner of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Roseland, she possessed a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her family.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, Marcel Antaki; devoted sons, Elie Antaki (June), Patrick Antaki (Michelle), Alan Antaki (Suzanne), and Roger Antaki; her loving grandchildren, Nicholas, Kiersten, Natalia, and Maxim; and her dear brothers, Dr. Sami “Jimmy” Abboud, Magdy Abboud, and Rafik Abboud.

During the period prior the November 5 election, the West Essex Tribune is making space available to each of the Township Council candidates, at no cost, for them to present their views to the public.

In an effort to keep the campaign focused on relevant issues, we have again asked the League of Women Voters of Livingston for assistance in preparing questions, as we have in previous years. It is our hope that this will enable the voters to make a direct comparison, which will assist them in making an informed voting decision.

The Livingston Zoning Board of Adjustment, on September 24, heard more than two hours of testimony regarding an application by Poto Developers, LLC for a final site plan and use variance for the commercial property at 222 South Livingston Avenue. It formerly housed the Breslow paint store.

The applicant proposes to expand the existing 2.5 story building to three stories and renovate the exterior facade. He plans to put a beauty salon on the first floor and two one-bedroom apartments on the upper levels.

A use variance will be required for the proposed apartments. The applicant is also requesting variances including parking; building height; and number of stories.

When receiving a thoughtful local donation of warm coats and other items for the “poor, homeless and disenfranchised,” Livingston Philanthropies, Inc. (LPI) was presented with a brand new, men’s leather winter coat. The tag with the hefty price tag was still attached.
The generous Livingston couple who donated it mentioned that perhaps, “LPI’s upcoming fur sale can include men’s and women’s leather, too.” My initial thought was “what a brilliant idea.”

TEAM HAS TWO WINS: The Lady Lancers varsity soccer team defeated Newark Academy and Montclair Kimberley Academy this past week, each by 2-1 scores. The Lancers played cross-town opponent Newark Academy on the Minutemen’s Kacur Field on Tuesday, September 10. On Wednesday, September 11, the Lancers traveled to Montclair for an Essex County matchup. HONORING A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER FOR 60 YEARS: Livingston Fire Chief Christopher Mullin is shown presenting Frank Leck with a letter from Assemblyman John McKeon recognizing the volunteer firefighter for his 60 years of service to the Township of Livingston. “Frank joined our Department in 1959 and he still continues to serve faithfully to this day,” said Chief Mullin. “You just don’t find guys like Frank anymore, he is a true Livingston asset. We cannot forget the sacrifices that Frank’s wife Linda has endured over the years, keeping the family going while Frank served the residents of the Township. Keep up the great work, Frank and Linda, and thank you for your service.”

Residents are asked to consider contributing to the First Aid Squad, which works tirelessly to keep our community safe.
